In the hinterland of the Tianshan Mountains in Naryn Oblast, Kyrgyzstan, the tunneling machines for four main tunnels are roaring day and night. The Kyrgyzstan National Railway Company has announced that since the official launch of the China Kyrgyzstan Uzbekistan Railway project on December 27, 2024, construction has been carried out simultaneously on multiple sections, and four key tunnels have entered the excavation stage. This cross-border railway, which has been waiting for nearly thirty years, is transforming from a blueprint to a reality at a visible speed to the naked eye.

Breaking through the soil from the hinterland of Tianshan Mountains

The China Kyrgyzstan Uzbekistan railway project can be traced back to a memorandum of cooperation in 1997, but its progress was delayed due to factors such as track standards, financing plans, and geopolitics. On December 27, 2024, the project was officially launched in Kyrgyzstan, with a total length of 305 kilometers. At present, the project has been constructed simultaneously on multiple road sections, with plans to build 29 tunnels and 50 bridges. Excavation work for the four main tunnels has already begun. The total implementation period of the project is 6 years, with the goal of being completed and open to traffic before 2026.

Reshaping the Asia Europe Trade Corridor

After the completion of the China Kyrgyzstan Uzbekistan Railway, a new strategic route will be formed from China to Europe via Central Asia. Compared to existing routes, the transportation distance will be shortened by over 1000 kilometers, significantly reducing logistics costs and transportation time. This new channel will enable Chinese goods to enter the Central Asian and European markets more quickly, while reducing reliance on the traditional northern route and providing a more resilient strategic backup for Asia Europe trade. Generating new opportunities for regional development

The railway construction itself has created a large number of job opportunities for the local area, and projects such as tunnels, bridges, and roadbeds continue to release demand for building materials, equipment, and services. After completion and opening to traffic, supporting industries such as logistics, warehousing, and trade will experience explosive growth, injecting strong impetus into the economic development of the areas along the route. For Chinese enterprises, from engineering contracting to equipment export, from cross-border trade to logistics services, the China Kyrgyzstan Uzbekistan Railway is opening a golden window into the Central Asian market.Editor/Gao Xue
