In the Khatlon Oblast of southern Tajikistan, as night falls, many families still have to face frequent power outages and restrictions. Although this is a major agricultural region, it has long been plagued by the 'electricity shortage'. On March 28, 2026, a meeting brought a turning point - Governor Ifratali Said met with representatives of China's SETS company to discuss the construction of a 500 MW solar power plant. If the project is implemented, this sunny land is expected to transform from a "power shortage" to a "power supply" highland.

At present, although the project is in the negotiation stage, the details are quite specific. Both parties not only discussed the construction schedule, but also involved substantive content such as personnel training and technology introduction. SETS has shown a strong willingness to invest and plans to introduce modern photovoltaic technology. It is worth noting that Hartlung State has recently been in contact with multiple Chinese new energy companies, demonstrating the urgent attitude of Tajikistan to "look east" in the energy sector.

Although Tajikistan relies mainly on hydropower, the winter dry season often leads to nationwide power shortages. The population growth in Hartlong State is fast, and the power grid is under great pressure, making power outages a common occurrence. The transition to solar energy is not only an emergency need, but also a national strategy - Tajikistan plans to increase the proportion of renewable energy to over 10% by 2030. 500 megawatts of green electricity input will directly fill the energy black hole during the dry season.

This is not only a single project cooperation, but also a microcosm of China's green power layout in Central Asia. Previously, Tajikistan had signed a solar energy agreement totaling 2 gigawatts at the Dushanbe Forum, involving multiple Chinese companies. If the SETS project is completed, it will become a landmark project for China Tajikistan green energy cooperation, not only exporting Chinese funds and technology, but also helping Tajikistan seize the opportunity in the Central Asian green power market.Editor/Yang Meiling
