On April 10, 2026, in the morning light of Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, a brand new asphalt road runs straight from the airport into the heart of the city. When the Minister of Transport and Engineering, Muhango, received the project handover certificate, this less than ten kilometer section was officially handed over from Chinese builders to the people of Malawi.

Nine years of congestion resolved in one go

Muhango admitted at the handover ceremony that the M1 highway was once the most headache inducing bottleneck in Lilongwe before the upgrade. After the renovation, the travel time of the city's main roads has been significantly reduced, and the efficiency of cargo turnover between airports and urban areas has been significantly improved. During the construction period, hundreds of local workers mastered the techniques of roadbed paving and asphalt proportioning, and their skills training and employment opportunities were simultaneously implemented.

Shandong Road and Bridge Construction of Main Arteries

The project is undertaken by Shandong Road and Bridge Group Co., Ltd. and will start construction at the end of 2021, with a total length of 9.455 kilometers. Although the route is short, it is the only fast track connecting the airport and the city center. Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Lu Xu stated on site that this road is not only a transportation corridor, but also a cooperative link leading to development and prosperity. China's aid to construction continues to expand its territory

In recent years, China's assistance to Malawi has covered multiple areas such as infrastructure, agricultural technology, medical team deployment, and educational facilities. The handover of M1 highway is not the end point, but another link in the practical cooperation chain between China and Malaysia. When vehicles in Lilongwe are no longer trapped in mud and congestion, this steel and asphalt paved passage is silently rewriting the circulation efficiency of landlocked countries in Southeast Africa.Editor/Gao Xue
