On May 15, 2026, the fifth phase of the Nansha Port Area project of Guangzhou Port officially began construction. As one of the 102 major projects in the national 14th Five Year Plan and the first billion dollar project in Guangdong Province after the release of the plan, the total investment of the project is 14.447 billion yuan. By 2025, the container throughput of Guangzhou Port will reach 26.45 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 5.8%, with Nansha Port contributing over 80%. After the completion of the fifth phase, the annual throughput capacity of Nansha Port Area will soar to 35 million TEUs, ranking among the top single port areas in the world, and the international shipping hub level of the Greater Bay Area will undergo another qualitative change.

Further expansion of world-class port area

The annual container throughput capacity of Nansha Phase V is 6.7 million TEUs, including 4.6 million TEUs for sea vessel berths and 2.1 million TEUs for barge berths. The project will construct 4 berths for 200000 ton container ships, along with 15 berths for 5000 ton barges and 5 berths for workboats, with a total shoreline length of over 3800 meters. It can berth global ultra large container ships 24/7 and fully meet the development needs of long-distance mainline shipping.

Open up dual channels for ocean and inland transportation

After the completion of the fifth phase of the project, it will efficiently coordinate and operate with the existing 20 deep-water container berths in Nansha Port and 4 deep-water berths in the international general terminal, with an annual container throughput capacity exceeding 35 million TEUs. The project will synchronously improve the supporting system of inland waterway transportation, smooth the intermodal transportation channels of ocean shipping and inland waterway shipping, effectively strengthen the ability of ports in the Greater Bay Area to guarantee ocean shipping routes, and build a professional, large-scale, and integrated world-class terminal cluster in South China. Supporting the backbone of the Greater Bay Area port cluster

In the first quarter of 2026, the total import and export value of Guangdong's foreign trade reached 2.1 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.6%, and the demand for port logistics continued to be strong. As the first billion dollar project at the beginning of the 15th Five Year Plan, Nansha Phase 5 will further support the construction of Guangdong's modern coastal economic belt through transportation interconnection, industrial cooperation, and service sharing, promote the construction of a modern industrial system with international competitiveness in the Greater Bay Area, and inject strong momentum into the construction of a world-class port cluster.Editor/Cheng Liting
