On June 1, 2026, the government of Kazakhstan officially announced six plans for coal chemical industry projects, covering two major stages of construction and planning. These projects will rely on the country's abundant coal resources to promote the transformation of raw coal into high value-added products such as metallurgical coke, synthetic fuels, and chemical raw materials, and help upgrade the local energy and raw material industry chain.

Kazakhstan is accelerating efforts to fill the gaps in deep processing

Kazakhstan's coal reserves rank among the top in the world, but for a long time, it has mainly relied on exporting raw coal and primary raw materials, and there is a significant gap in the deep processing industry chain.

The six coal chemical projects launched in 2026 are key measures for the country to promote industrial diversification and break away from the resource-based economic structure. By constructing downstream facilities such as coal to fuel, fine chemicals, and agricultural products, Kazakhstan hopes to transform its resource advantages into industrial competitiveness and improve its independent and controllable energy and chemical system.

The production capacity layout is gradually becoming clearer

At present, the progress of two ongoing projects is clear: the annual production of 1 million tons of metallurgical coke project in Karaganda area is under construction, which is expected to create 500 permanent job opportunities; Pavlodar and Karaganda each have an annual production capacity of 100000 tons of synthetic coal diesel facilities, which have entered the construction phase.

Three other projects have completed preliminary site selection and entered the planning stage: Karaganda will construct comprehensive facilities for coal tar deep processing, benzene extraction, and coke oven gas purification; Abai Province plans to build a new ammonia urea agrochemical plant; In addition, it also includes a dedicated facility for converting raw coal to synthetic gas. The six projects cover diverse processing tracks downstream of coal, and the production capacity layout has taken initial shape.

From raw material output to industrial autonomy

This round of project layout focuses on the on-site conversion of local raw coal, taking into account the multiple needs of metallurgical support, clean energy, and chemical production. Keywords: Central Asian news and information, coal chemical industry

Kazakhstan is gradually building a complete coal chemical industry chain by promoting mature under construction projects and forward-looking planning of high-end downstream facilities. This helps to reduce dependence on external raw materials and finished products, promote the transformation of energy and resource advantages into industrial and economic advantages, and provide substantial support for the upgrading of the domestic industrial system.Editor/Gao Xue
