Recently, EWEC, a water and electricity company in the United Arab Emirates, released operational data showing that Abu Dhabi's renewable and clean energy generation will grow by over 1000% from 2020 to 2025. The power generation of nuclear, photovoltaic, and wind power has increased from about 4100 gigawatt hours in 2020 to over 49300 gigawatt hours in 2025, and the proportion of clean energy in the total power generation has risen from less than 5% to nearly 46%. Behind the impressive numbers is the continuous implementation of long-term energy planning and large-scale clean energy infrastructure.

Nuclear power photovoltaic dual wheel drive

As the first nuclear power plant in the Arab world, the Balaka Nuclear Power Plant is the core support for the growth of power generation. The four units of the power station will be connected to the grid gradually from 2020 to 2024, continuously outputting zero carbon electricity. The photovoltaic sector is equally crucial, with projects such as Alda Farah Photovoltaic Power Station and Nur Abu Dhabi Photovoltaic Power Station significantly enhancing green power supply capacity. Both power stations are among the world's largest centralized photovoltaic projects, and are important milestones for Abu Dhabi's large-scale development of centralized photovoltaics.

Chinese enterprises deeply participate in the construction

During the rapid growth of new energy in Abu Dhabi, Chinese enterprises have been deeply involved in centralized photovoltaic and energy storage supporting projects. The Alda Farah 2.1 GW photovoltaic power station is EPC contracted by State Machinery Engineering Group, and will continue to stably deliver clean electricity after the project is put into operation. The PV3 Ajiban 1.5 GW photovoltaic project undertaken by China Power Construction is steadily advancing, and after completion, it can generate 4.4 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually. The fourth phase of Dubai Maktoum Solar Park's comprehensive solar thermal photovoltaic project was implemented by Shanghai Electric, using a combination of photovoltaics and solar thermal solutions to alleviate output fluctuations. The RTC solar energy storage project plans to combine 5.2 gigawatts of photovoltaics with 19 gigawatt hours of energy storage. China Power Construction undertakes the EPC of 2.1 gigawatts of photovoltaics and 7.75 gigawatt hours of energy storage in the northern block, while Sunac provides a 7.5 gigawatt hour liquid cooled energy storage system and a 2.6 gigawatt photovoltaic inverter. Expand wind power and supporting facilities together

On the wind power track, PowerChina has built the first centralized wind power demonstration project in the United Arab Emirates, breaking the local renewable energy development pattern dominated by photovoltaics. Domestic manufacturers such as Huawei, Jinko, and Sunac continue to supply inverters and liquid cooled energy storage PCS equipment, which are suitable for high temperature and high dust conditions in deserts. Chinese enterprises also bring a complete set of solutions adapted to desert environments, such as waterless cleaning, tracking brackets, high-temperature heat dissipation, and unmanned booster stations, to reduce the long-term operation and maintenance pressure of desert power stations, promote local employment, and cultivate supporting industrial chains. This round of clean energy expansion is in line with Abu Dhabi's 2035 clean energy strategy for power generation and also supports the UAE's 2050 net zero emissions strategy.Editor/Gao Xue
