Indian private power producer JSW Energy has announced that its subsidiary JSW Renewable Energy (Vijayanagar) has commissioned a 225MW solar power plant in the Vijayanagar district of Karnataka state. The project is part of an earlier announced 958MW solar and wind project signed with JSW Steel under the group's exclusive programme. The electricity produced will be consumed by JSW Steel under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

"The solar project has commenced operations in a record time of less than 12 months, despite a number of headwinds including Covid-19-related disruptions, rising commodity prices and disruptions to global supply chains," JSW Energy said.

In addition to this, the company is building 2.25 GW of greenfield renewable energy capacity. JSW Energy aims to reduce its carbon footprint by 50% by 2030 and become carbon neutral by 2050 by transitioning to renewable energy. The company aims to reach a capacity of 20 gigawatts by 2030, with the entire increase in capacity driven by renewable energy. In new growth areas, JSW Energy is working on the scoping of pilot projects for green hydrogen production and use in green steelmaking, hydrogen-based mobility, green ammonia and other applications.
