On June 20, 2023, the construction of the main structure of the east Artificial island of the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Bridge will be fully completed, marking the formal formation of the main body of the first underwater interchange of expressway in China. In the early stage, the submarine tunnel of the Shenzhen China Channel has successfully completed closure, and Shenzhen and Zhongshan have achieved interconnection under the ocean floor.

The East People's Island is the portal project at the Shenzhen end of the project. It is located in the south of Shenzhen Bao'an Airport, adjacent to the Fuyong Airport wharf, connected to the Shenzhen side connection project of the Guangzhou Shenzhen River Expressway under construction in the east, and connected to the submarine tunnel of the project in the west.

The whole land area of the East Artificial island is 343800 square meters, equivalent to 48 international standard football fields. The island is equipped with tunnel works, rescue docks, power supply and distribution supporting rooms and related ancillary facilities. Among them, the tunnel project includes a 480 meter long weir section tunnel, an 855 meter long island mainline tunnel, and four ramp tunnels that achieve traffic conversion.

On December 21, 2017, the construction of the East Artificial island was officially started. After more than 2000 days of hard work, the construction team has successively overcome the problems of seepage control, water stop and uniform backfill control during the construction phase of the deep soft foundation, ultra deep and ultra wide foundation pit cluster project in the sea area, and solved the problem of deep foundation pit construction approaching the world of small deformation of structures. This T-shaped Artificial island with one body and two wings has taken a critical step towards the goal of opening to traffic in 2024. At present, the civil works of the Shenzhen–Zhongshan Bridge have entered the final stage.

The Shenzhen–Zhongshan Bridge is a national Megaproject and also represents the world's leading level. It has a total length of 24 kilometers and integrates bridges, islands, tunnels, and underwater interchanges. Editor/Xie Li
