The Australian federal government recently announced an additional investment of 3.8 billion Australian dollars, approximately 2.71 billion US dollars, in the Melbourne suburban loop railway project, bringing the federal government's cumulative investment in this 90 kilometer, 125 billion Australian dollar super infrastructure project to over 6 billion Australian dollars. The route will connect Cheltenham in the southeast and Werribe in the southwest, passing through Melbourne Airport, and is expected to reshape the rail transit pattern of the Greater Melbourne region.

3.8 billion Australian dollars additional capital injection
The SRL project adopts a four section construction plan, with the first phase spanning 26 kilometers in the eastern section, extending from Cheltenham to Mount Bokes. The Victorian government has pledged to invest approximately AUD 11.8 billion and awarded construction contracts worth a total of AUD 13 billion, with two additional contract packages planned to be finalized in 2026 and 2027.
The initial estimated cost for the eastern section was AUD 35 billion, but it has since significantly increased due to inflation and increased project complexity. The official total cost has not been officially announced yet. The additional AUD 3.8 billion from the federal government has increased the total investment in the 90 kilometer project to over AUD 6 billion, and the pace of funding has significantly accelerated.
Bet on urban rail connectivity
The timing of this additional investment is quite indicative. Just recently, the federal government essentially shelved a $45 billion inland rail freight project due to soaring costs and lack of feasibility. Against the backdrop of federal financial pressure, SRL has been continuously strengthened, highlighting the rising position of urban rail transit in the national infrastructure priority.

Prime Minister Albanese stated that the core value of SRL is to enable residents to cross the suburbs without having to transit through the central business district, which can shorten commuting time, reduce road vehicles, and unleash new business opportunities for the eastern part of Melbourne. Under the overall framework of AUD 125 billion, SRL is accelerating from planning to the construction phase. With continuous funding from the federal and state governments, this circular railway that runs through the southern part of Melbourne is expected to reshape the urban spatial structure and become the largest urban rail transit project in Australia in recent years.Editor/Cheng Liting
