On June 27, 2023, the Burqin Pumped-storage hydroelectricity project was approved by the Development and Reform Commission of Xinjiang, becoming the first Pumped-storage hydroelectricity project in Xinjiang to complete the approval during the "14th Five Year Plan" period, the first Pumped-storage hydroelectricity project approved by CNNC in Xinjiang, and another milestone project for Xinhua Power Generation to deepen the implementation of industrial assistance from central enterprises to build and revitalize Xinjiang.

Burqin Pumped-storage hydroelectricity project is a key implementation project in the national pumped storage medium and long-term development plan (2021-2035). The total investment of the project is 11.43 billion yuan, with a total installed capacity of 1.4 million kilowatts and a designed annual power generation of 1.75 billion kilowatt hours.

After the completion and operation of the power station, it will play an important role in promoting the consumption of new energy, promoting green and low-carbon energy transformation, and ensuring the safe and stable operation of the power system. It is expected to save 726900 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 2.1865 million tons annually. The project has significant economic benefits, social benefits, and ecological benefits.

The approval of the Burqin Pumped-storage hydroelectricity project is a key step for Xinhua Power Generation to plan and build a 10 million Kilopower integrated green energy base of water, wind, electricity and storage in the Irtysh basin.
