India installed 10016 megawatts of solar energy and 2806 megawatts of wind power in 2023. According to a new report by JMK Research, solar installed capacity has decreased by 28% compared to calendar year 2022, while wind installed capacity has increased by 52% year-on-year.

The newly added solar projects in 2023 include approximately 6.5 gigawatts of utility scale solar installations, 3 gigawatts of rooftop components, and nearly 500 megawatts of off grid/distributed solar components.

JMK Research attributed the decline in utility scale solar installations to sluggish bidding activities between 2020 and 2022. With the recent surge in bidding activities, the company stated that it expects an increase in the scale of solar installations for public utilities in the future.

Rajasthan installed a large-scale photovoltaic capacity of 2193 megawatts in 2023, leading all states, followed by Gujarat (1317 megawatts) and Maharashtra (979 megawatts). Gujarat State commissioned over 1300MW of new projects in 2023, leading wind power installations.

According to data from the Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India's installed renewable energy capacity has now reached 133.89 gigawatts. Solar energy accounts for about 55% of the total installed capacity of renewable energy, with the largest share, followed by wind energy.Editor/XingWentao
