The energy cooperation news from Saudi Arabia in December 2025 added a significant touch to the map of global energy transition. During the Saudi Bahrain Coordinating Committee meeting, ACWA Power and Bapco Energies officially signed a milestone joint development agreement. The two sides plan to jointly develop a comprehensive power station integrating solar power generation and large-scale battery energy storage in the eastern provinces of Saudi Arabia, with a planned total installed capacity of up to 2.8 gigawatts. The generated electricity will be directly transmitted to Bahrain to support its national energy needs. This is not only a super energy project, but also a landmark action for deepening strategic coordination and jointly pursuing a green future among Gulf countries.

The core of this project is to build a cross-border green energy corridor. According to the agreement, this phased construction power station will efficiently convert solar energy captured on the vast land of Saudi Arabia into stable electricity and deliver it to the load center in Bahrain. More importantly, the power station will integrate advanced battery energy storage systems to address the inherent intermittency issues of renewable energy and ensure stable and reliable power supply. This model has realized the separation and optimal allocation of energy production and consumption, and is a model of regional energy connectivity, which will significantly strengthen the energy security and resilience of the entire Gulf Cooperation Council.

The launch of the project is a precise resonance between Saudi Arabia's 2030 Vision and Bahrain's 2030 Economic Vision at the national development strategy level. For Saudi Arabia, which is vigorously promoting economic diversification and energy structure transformation, ACWA Power is the core engine for achieving its new energy ambitions. In July 2025, ACWA Power led the signing of a power purchase agreement for solar and wind projects with a total capacity of up to 15 gigawatts, setting a new global record for single phase development. This cooperation with Bahrain is an extension and deepening of this strategy, aimed at building Saudi Arabia into a regional and even global energy export hub.

For Bahrain, this cooperation is a bold leap forward in its energy future. Bahrain is committed to achieving its national energy strategy goals, including improving energy efficiency, diversifying its energy structure, and achieving net zero emissions by 2060. Through this agreement, Bahrain can not only obtain stable and clean electricity to accelerate decarbonization, but also lay the foundation for its long-term energy security through close cooperation with Saudi Arabia. As the national energy pillar of Bahrain, Bapco Energies is accelerating its transformation from a traditional oil and gas company to a provider of comprehensive energy solutions. The significance of Bahrain's 2.8 gigawatt mega project goes far beyond commercial cooperation itself. It symbolizes the tested and strong bilateral relationship between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, which is being given new meaning by jointly addressing climate change and ensuring energy security as a contemporary issue. It provides a replicable template for Gulf countries to explore regional integration cooperation based on renewable energy. When clean electricity crosses national borders, it not only lights up thousands of households, but also illuminates a new path towards sustainable, safe, and shared prosperity in regional cooperation.Editor/Cheng Liting
