The Dubai City Government has now initiated pre qualification of EPC contractors for a strategic deep tunnel drainage system project worth a total of 22 billion US dollars. Companies interested in participating must submit a qualification statement before February 26, 2024. It is reported that the list of pre qualified EPC contractors is expected to be announced before March 11th. Subsequently, the Dubai City Government plans to conduct PPP consortium pre qualification for the project in the second quarter of 2024.

The project was launched in 2015 and after a feasibility study, it was unable to start construction as scheduled due to funding issues. The sewage system plan was only restarted in 2023 with the approval of the Dubai Crown Prince's $21.8 billion funding support. Therefore, the estimated total investment of the project has also increased from the original $12.5 billion to $22 billion.

In June 2023, the Dubai City Government approved a strategic deep tunnel drainage system project with an estimated investment of approximately $22 billion. To ensure the smooth progress of the project, the Dubai City Government has selected Tribe Infrastructure Group from Abu Dhabi as the Chief Financial Advisor, Ashurst from the UK as the Legal Advisor, and Parsons from the US as the Technical Advisor. The DSST project is expected to be completed in five years and will replace Dubai's existing 121 electric sewage pumping stations, achieving a transformation of the sewage system from pumping to gravity and significantly reducing operating costs. The tunnel penetrates 25 to 90 meters underground, with a design lifespan of up to a hundred years and a 30% reduction in carbon emissions. This project aims to meet the population needs of Dubai for the next century, in line with Dubai's economic agenda D33 and urban planning 2040.
