On April 11, 2024, as Tian Guobing, Secretary of the Party Committee, chairman and chief commander of the engineering headquarters of Zhanjiang Steel of Baosteel Co., LTD., issued the order to start work, six pile machines made a roaring sound, which opened the prelude to the construction of Baosteel Zhanjiang zero-carbon high-grade sheet steel plant project. The project is China's first near-zero carbon production line for hydrogen-based shaft furnace + electric furnace short-process smelting and production of high-grade thin steel plates, which has a milestone significance for promoting the green and low-carbon transformation and development of the steel industry.

The total investment of the project is about 4.5 billion yuan, and the main equipment includes a 220-ton efficient green electric furnace, refining facilities, 2150mm single-flow slab continuous casting machine and related supporting public facilities. Through digital design and intelligent empowerment, we will create a greener and more intelligent zero-carbon demonstration factory. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025, with an annual output of about 1.8 million tons of zero-carbon sheet capacity.

After the completion of the zero-carbon high-grade sheet steel plant project, it will use hydrogen-based shaft furnace + scrap steel raw materials to produce near-zero carbon slab, and use green electricity energy to build Baosteel Zhanjiang Steel zero-carbon demonstration plant. It is expected that after putting into operation, compared with the traditional long-process process, carbon emissions can be reduced by more than 3.14 million tons per year, and finally realize the zero-carbon plant of the whole process.

As a pioneer in green transformation, Zhanjiang Iron and Steel actively explores the integration of hydrogen energy and steel development, innovatively uses hydrogen-based shaft furnace + electric furnace short process to produce green sheet steel, breaks through the manufacturing difficulties of high-quality automotive panels and silicon steel products, and achieves stable and large-scale supply. The zero-carbon high-grade sheet steel plant project is another important step taken by Zhanjiang Steel on the road to zero carbon, and once again demonstrates its firm determination after the successful ignition of the first set of million-ton hydrogen-based shaft furnace project in China.
