On May 8, according to the latest report from global energy think tank Ember: in 2023, thanks to the growth of solar and wind power generation, renewable energy will account for an unprecedented 30% of global electricity generation. 2023 May be a landmark turning point for the power sector's carbon emissions to peak.

"The future of renewable energy is here. Solar energy, in particular, is developing faster than anyone imagined. "Emissions from the power sector are likely to peak in 2023 - a major turning point in energy history." "Said Dave Jones, Ember's head of global insights.

Yang Muyi, senior power policy analyst at Ember, said that at present, most of the wind power generation is concentrated in China and developed economies. In particular, China is making a significant contribution to global wind and solar power growth in 2023. It added 51 percent of the world's new solar power and 60 percent of new wind power. China's solar and wind capacity and electricity generation growth will remain high in the coming years.

This is an unprecedented opportunity for countries that choose to be at the forefront of a clean energy future. Clean power expansion will not only help decarbonize the power sector in the first place, it will also provide the incremental supply needed to electrify entire economies, which will be a truly transformative force in the fight against climate change.

Ember's Global Power Review 2024 report, based on multi-country datasets including data from the International Energy Agency, Eurostat, the United Nations, and individual national statistical offices, provides a comprehensive overview of the global power system in 2023. The report covers 80 of the world's leading countries, which account for 92% of global electricity demand, as well as historical data for 215 countries.

According to the report, in 2023, thanks to the growth of solar and wind power generation, the share of global renewable energy generation exceeded 30% for the first time. Nearly 40% of the world's electricity comes from low-carbon sources, including nuclear. The carbon dioxide intensity of global power generation is at a record low, 12% below its 2007 peak.
