On May 30th, Emir Mishal of Kuwait attended the launch ceremony of the Azur Refinery's full operation and unveiled the monument of the project. Prime Minister Ahmed Abdullah and other senior officials attended the ceremony.
During a speech at the ceremony held that day, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Oil of Kuwait, Imad Atiqi, emphasized that the Azur refinery is one of the most important projects in Kuwait's development plan and a major pillar of Kuwait Oil Company's 2040 strategy. This project will help Kuwait's 2035 national vision become a reality. It helps to enhance product competitiveness, open up global emerging markets, and strengthen Kuwait's position as a major global energy supplier. In terms of providing employment, the project attracted 1400 Kuwaiti fresh graduates with university diplomas to participate.
Wada Hatib, Acting CEO of Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industry Corporation, stated at the ceremony that the Azur refinery is fully operational with a daily production of 615000 barrels, which not only meets global environmental standards but also enables Kuwait Oil Corporation and its subsidiaries to expand their export marketing of petroleum products.
On December 3, 2023, Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industry Corporation announced the successful launch of the last refining unit at the Azur refinery, marking the full operation of the refinery.
The Azur refinery project, which embodies the advanced technology and scientific concept of Chinese enterprises, is a key project linking the the Belt and Road Initiative with Kuwait's 2035 national vision. More than half of the contract share of the project is completed by Chinese enterprises. Sinopec Fifth Construction Co., Ltd. is responsible for the construction of six refining units, and all of them will be completed in 2021. Sinopec Luoyang Engineering Co., Ltd., as one of the general contractors of the project, is responsible for the construction of 15 core refining units, which were completed in 2019.
