Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical recently announced a major investment plan to build a new large-tow carbon fiber project with a total investment of approximately 3.2 billion yuan.

The large-tow carbon fiber project that Shanghai Petrochemical plans to build covers the entire process from raw yarn production to carbon fiber manufacturing. The project is divided into two main parts: the raw yarn part and the carbon fiber part. Among them, the raw yarn part is located in the company's existing factory in Jinshan District, Shanghai, and a 60,000-ton/year large-tow raw yarn device is built; the carbon fiber part is located in the Sulige Economic Development Zone, Ordos City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and a 30,000-ton/year large-tow carbon fiber device is built. The total investment in the project is approximately 3.196 billion yuan. Shanghai Petrochemical said that the main target market for this product is pultruded sheets for wind turbine blades. In 2024, the 48K large-tow carbon fiber wind turbine material produced by Shanghai Petrochemical will be manufactured by Sany Heavy Energy Company into the world's longest onshore wind turbine blade of 131 meters.

Shanghai Petrochemical's large-tow carbon fiber project is a strategically significant investment aimed at meeting the demand for high-performance carbon fiber materials in emerging industries such as wind power. Editor/Zhao E
