In 2025, the regional government of Galicia announced the launch of a renovation programme for the region's oldest wind farm. The plan is to improve the efficiency of the wind farm by repowering and updating equipment. Five of the 25 oldest wind farms in the region have been converted and owners of the remaining 20 wind farms have 18 months to submit their conversion projects.
Maria Jesus Lorenzana, Minister of Economy and Industry of the Galicia Region, visited one of the completed wind farms in Sasse (Deportivo Coruna) on Tuesday morning. "In Galicia, there will be a significant increase in the number of repowered wind farms in the coming years," she said. This move is in accordance with the provisions of the financial and administrative Measures Act, which requires the repowering of wind farms that have been in operation for more than 25 years.
The renovated wind farm will significantly increase the power generation capacity. The Zas Wind farm, owned by EDP, for example, reduced its wind turbines from 80 300 kW units to 10 2,400 kW units, doubling its power generation from 52.8 GWH to more than 100 GWH per year, enough to meet the electricity needs of 30,000 households. In addition, the operating time of the new equipment has increased from an average of 2,200 hours for a typical wind farm to more than 4,000 hours.
According to Red Electrica's annual report, Galicia is the third most wind-generated autonomous region in Spain, with 9,086 gigawatt hours of electricity generated annually. Xunta expects wind power to make the largest contribution to Galicia's energy mix in 2023, accounting for up to 38.1%. Editor/Xu Shengpeng
