Recently, a consortium led by India's renowned engineering contracting group Larsen & Toubro and partnered with Spain's Lantania Company has successfully won the bid for the EPC project of the Ras Mohaisen Independent Water Desalination Project (Ras Mohaisen IWP) in Saudi Arabia.

Project Overview

The project developer is ACWA Power, a well-known water and power developer in Saudi Arabia. The scope of the contract includes:

·Design, procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning of the seawater reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant

·Water intake and drainage facilities

·Process units and pumping stations

·Drinking water storage facilities with a capacity of 600,000 cubic meters

·Power, automation, and instrumentation systems

·Supporting solar photovoltaic (PV) power station

The planned daily treatment capacity of the project: 300,000 cubic meters per day.

The planned service areas of the project: Makkah Al-Mukarramah and Al-Baha regions, benefiting approximately one million people.

This project is the second seawater desalination engineering project that L&T has obtained in Saudi Arabia. The value of the engineering contract is approximately between 287 million and 574 million US dollars. In February 2024, a consortium of developers composed of ACWA Power, Haji Abdullah Alireza & Partners Company, and AlKifah Holding signed a 25-year Water Purchase Agreement (WPA) with the Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) to be responsible for the construction and operation of this seawater desalination project.

Total project investment: 667 million US dollars.

Estimated commercial operation time: The first quarter of 2030.

The implementation of this project will further enhance Saudi Arabia's water resource supply capacity, improve the water supply security in Makkah and Al-Baha regions. At the same time, combined with solar photovoltaic technology, it will enhance the sustainability and environmental friendliness of the project.

L&T has already become a formidable competitor for Chinese enterprises in the fields of infrastructure construction, energy, and new energy in the Middle East. (This article is from the official website of Seetao.com, www.seetao.com.
