In 2026, a year of significant geopolitical changes in the Middle East, the Syrian energy sector has reached a landmark turning point. Syrian Petroleum Company and Saudi listed drilling giant ADES Holding officially signed an implementation contract last Sunday, announcing the joint development of core natural gas fields in central Syria. This is not only a commercial agreement, but also seen as the first cornerstone of economic integration between Saudi Arabia and Syria after the restoration of full diplomatic relations.

According to the agreement, ADES Holding will fully take over the development operations of five strategic oil and gas fields, including Abu Rabah and North Al Faydh. Unlike previous simple repairs, this collaboration focuses on deploying intelligent drilling platforms and AI driven predictive maintenance systems. According to industry data, the equipment invested by ADES this time includes a new type of electric drilling rig, which can effectively reduce carbon emissions and adapt to the complex geological conditions of Syria. If the goal is achieved, it is expected that by the fourth quarter of 2026, Syria's daily natural gas supply capacity will significantly increase, and the duration of power outages in major cities such as Damascus is expected to be reduced from the current 12 hours per day to less than 8 hours.

As the core implementation project of Saudi Arabia's Levant Initiative in 2026, ADES Holding is not only a single contractor, but has also led the formation of an energy consortium covering capital from the United Arab Emirates and Jordan, committed to modernizing Syria's aging energy infrastructure across the entire industry chain. With the EU further relaxing the "humanitarian exemption" clause for the Syrian energy sector in early 2026, Saudi capital is accelerating its influx. The first batch of Saudi technical experts who have been deeply involved in the region have entered Homs province this month, bringing not only equipment but also an HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) management system that meets international standards. This collaboration goes beyond simple business logic. According to the "2026 Middle East Energy Outlook" report, Saudi Arabia is attempting to incorporate Syria's upstream gas sources into the Saudi led "regional energy security network" by controlling them. This can not only alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Syria, but also consolidate Saudi Arabia's strategic pivot position in the Eastern Mediterranean energy corridor. With the deepening of economic interdependence between the two countries, the energy landscape in the Middle East is moving from "fragmented competition" to a new stage of deep integration of "Saudi capital+Syrian resources+international technology".Editor/Cheng Liting
