On May 19, CNOOC Chemical's bio-natural gas-to-green methanol demonstration project opened up the production process at one time and successfully produced the first ton of green methanol products using municipal waste as raw materials in China, marking a solid step forward for the company in promoting green and low-carbon transformation and upgrading and future industrial development.
CNOOC Chemical's green methanol project uses biogas produced from the fermentation of municipal wastes such as food waste and animal manure as raw materials, and uses the company's existing natural gas-to-methanol plant to produce green methanol. "Compared with traditional methanol, the green methanol produced by the project has a 79% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions throughout its life cycle, exceeding the EU emission reduction standard by 10%." The person in charge of the Hainan project of the company's green methanol working group said.
The whole industrial chain of the project has successfully passed the international sustainable development and carbon certification (ISCC certification for short), and won the first green methanol ISCC EU certificate using municipal waste as raw material in China. ISCC EU is a mandatory certification system for bioenergy products to enter the EU market, and its influence has covered more than 100 countries and regions.
After the CNOOC Chemical Green Methanol Demonstration Project is put into operation, it will produce on demand according to orders, realize a new development model of green and low-carbon circular industrial chain with "municipal waste-clean energy-green fuel" as the main body, and provide impetus for the green transformation of the company's traditional industries and help achieve the goal of carbon peak and carbon neutrality.
The opening of the production process of CNOOC's municipal waste bio-natural gas to green methanol demonstration project is a major achievement of CNOOC in the process of green transformation. This project is a good coupling of CNOOC's experience and technology in the field of carbon-rich natural gas to methanol.
At the beginning of May 2025, the whole industrial chain of the project successfully passed the international sustainable development and carbon certification (ISCC certification for short), which means that the green methanol product has obtained the EU access certificate, laying a solid foundation for the project to enter the international market after it is officially put into production.
In March 2025, CNOOC (Shanxi) Precious Metals Co., Ltd. issued a tender announcement for the 200Nm³/h PEM electrolyzer supporting skid-mounted auxiliary device (BOP). On May 15, 2025, CNOOC Supply Chain Digital Platform announced the winning bid results of "CNOOC Development - Shanghai Regional Center - MW PEM Hydrogen Production System Skid-mounted Auxiliary Device (BOP)", and Suzhou Hydrogen Energy Technology Co., Ltd. won the bid with 1.5 million.
On October 22, 2024, the world's farthest liquid hydrogen shipping demonstration project implemented by CNOOC successfully arrived at Yantian Port in Shenzhen, completing the long-distance transoceanic transportation of liquid hydrogen above tonnage for the first ship. The successful implementation of the project has taken the lead in connecting the entire industrial chain of liquid hydrogen transoceanic transportation in China, providing a technical foundation for the development of China's large-scale hydrogen energy intercontinental storage and transfer utilization industry in the future, and actively promoting the green and low-carbon transformation and upgrading of China's energy.
On December 20, 2024, CNOOC Energy Development Co., Ltd.'s world's first megawatt-level seawater electrolysis hydrogen production unit was successfully put into trial operation at the company's megawatt-level seawater electrolysis hydrogen production demonstration pilot base. This marks an important breakthrough in CNOOC's direct electrolysis of seawater to produce hydrogen.
On June 29, 2022, CNOOC Limited officially released the CNOOC "Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality" Action Plan (hereinafter referred to as the "Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality Action Plan"). The "Double Carbon Action Plan" plans to achieve carbon peak in 2028 and carbon neutrality in 2050; In 2050, two-thirds of domestic energy products will be clean energy, and non-fossil energy production will account for more than 50%, becoming the backbone of China's "dual carbon" goal and ensuring national energy security.(This article is from the official website of Seetao www.seetao.com.
