China National Petroleum Corporation Tarim Oilfield Branch has made significant progress in the construction of the Shangku High tech Zone Low carbon Transformation 1.3 million kilowatt Photovoltaic Project in Korla City, Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. As the first million kilowatt level "green power direct connection" demonstration project in northwest China, this project has completed grid connected power generation and has produced over 200 million kilowatt hours of green electricity.

The project is located on the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, 65 kilometers away from Korla City, with a total area of 35000 acres. The project includes supporting facilities such as photovoltaic field area, 2 220 kV booster stations, and 130000 kW/260000 kWh ultra large energy storage power stations. This is the first million kilowatt level integrated photovoltaic project in Tarim Oilfield, and also a landmark project for the development of China National Petroleum Corporation's new energy business.

After the project is completed, it is expected to produce an average of 2.1 billion kilowatt hours of green electricity annually. Tarim Oilfield Branch, in collaboration with State Grid Corporation of China and Dushanzi Petrochemical Branch of China National Petroleum Corporation, innovatively adopts a direct power supply mode to directly transmit green electricity to the nearby Dushanzi Petrochemical Company's ethylene project, achieving on-site consumption of new energy. This model can not only effectively alleviate the power gap during the peak period of local power consumption, but also significantly improve the regional energy consumption structure.

On August 21, 2024, the main construction of the project was fully launched. After nearly half a year of intense construction, the project successfully achieved grid connected power generation in January 2025. According to calculations, the project can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 1.7 million tons throughout its entire lifecycle, which is of great significance for promoting the transformation of energy structure and ecological environment protection in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

This project also explores a new model of "photovoltaic sand control". By constructing photovoltaic power stations in desert areas, it not only achieves efficient utilization of land resources, but also plays an ecological role in wind prevention and sand fixation. After the project is put into operation, it will create a large number of job opportunities for the local area, drive the development of related industrial chains, and promote regional economic transformation and upgrading.

Industry insiders point out that the successful implementation of this project provides valuable experience for China to develop renewable energy on a large scale in desert areas. Its innovative "green power direct connection" model provides a replicable solution for industrial enterprises' green and low-carbon transformation, which has important demonstration significance for achieving the "dual carbon" goal.

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) stated that it will continue to increase investment in the field of new energy, promote the implementation of more similar projects, and contribute to the construction of a clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy system. In the future, Tarim Oilfield plans to further expand the scale of photovoltaic power generation and build a national level clean energy demonstration base.
