The Chinese section of the 500kV interconnection project from Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province, China to Oudomxay Province in the Lao People's Democratic Republic has officially started construction. This project is a key project included in the Action Plan for the China Laos Community of Shared Future, invested and constructed by China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd. It is planned to be completed and put into operation in 2026.
The total length of the project line is 183.5km, divided into the Laos section and the China section. The Chinese section includes the 145km Xishuangbanna to Namo 500kV transmission line project in Laos and the 500kV Banna substation expansion project. The Laos section is constructed by EDL-T and started in February 2024. After the completion of the project, the mutual power supply capacity between China and Laos will reach 1500MW, with an annual transmission of about 3BkWh of clean electricity.
Fang Hong, the ambassador of the Chinese Embassy in Laos, said that the project is an important milestone for China and Laos to jointly build the the Belt and Road. Minister of Energy and Mines of Laos, Posay Saya Song, pointed out that the project will help Laos become an energy interconnection hub in ASEAN. Liu Wei, Deputy General Manager of China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd., emphasized that we will promote the implementation of advanced technology standards and create a model for regional power cooperation.
It is reported that Laos' electricity exports will reach 979.92 million US dollars in 2024, accounting for 15.35% of its total exports. China is its largest export market, accounting for 30.38%. This project will further enhance Laos' power radiation capability in the Lancang Mekong region.
