Indonesia has recently officially launched the largest renewable energy project in Southeast Asia - a 100 gigawatt solar power development plan. This grand clean energy plan will adopt a composite construction model of "80 gigawatts distributed+20 gigawatts centralized", marking a new stage in the country's energy transformation.

According to the specific implementation plan announced by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia, the 80 gigawatt distributed photovoltaic system operated and managed by the Koperasi Desa Mandiri Proenergi cooperative will be accompanied by the construction of a 320 gigawatt hour battery energy storage system. The project plans to cover 80000 villages nationwide in the Republic of Indonesia and is expected to significantly improve the accessibility of electricity in rural areas.

The latest research data from the Institute for Essential Services Reform in Indonesia shows that the country's potential for solar energy resource development is as high as 3300 to 20000 gigawatts, far exceeding the current national energy consumption. Of particular note is that global photovoltaic module prices have experienced a cliff like decline over the past decade, plummeting from $4.12 per watt in 2008 to $0.17 per watt in 2020, a staggering 95% decrease. This price change has given distributed photovoltaic power generation projects an economic advantage in the Republic of Indonesia to compete with traditional thermal power generation.

The implementation of the plan will strongly promote the Republic of Indonesia to achieve its carbon neutral commitment, and also open up broader space for new energy cooperation between China and the Republic of Indonesia under the the Belt and Road framework. After completion, the project will not only meet the growing demand for electricity in the local area, but also provide an important demonstration for the development of renewable energy in Southeast Asia.
