Recently, global investment giant Brookfield signed a joint investment framework agreement with Malaysian developer Solarvest, planning to build a combination of photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage system (BESS) projects with a total scale of at least 1.5GW in Malaysia.

According to the agreement, both parties will jointly develop, construct, and operate these projects, with Solarvest contributing its local development experience in Malaysia. It is worth mentioning that Solarvest has developed over 2.3GW of photovoltaic projects in Malaysia, including both operational and under construction projects

Both sides stated that the important reason for choosing Malaysia as the investment layout is that the country has a strong and attractive renewable energy market, relying on a robust demand base and supportive policy framework.

Daniel Cheng, Head of Renewable Energy and Energy Transition at Brookfield Asia Pacific, said, "Malaysia is gradually becoming a leader in regional clean energy, thanks to the country's ambitious new energy goals and the growing demand for energy from public utilities and businesses. Especially as the country becomes an important hub for data centers and semiconductor manufacturing, the demand for clean energy will continue to rise

In fact, the development of photovoltaic and energy storage projects in Malaysia continues to heat up. Last month, Malaysian clean energy company Gentari Renewables partnered with engineering infrastructure giant Gamuda to announce the construction of a 1.5GW solar energy storage combination project. The two companies pointed out that the project aims to meet the growing energy demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital services in future data centers, which is expected to reach 5GW by 2035.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts in its report "Artificial Intelligence and Data Centers" released in April 2025 that global data center electricity consumption will double by 2030, with an annual demand of over 945 TWh, demonstrating the enormous driving force of the digital age on renewable energy.

Overall, the cooperation between Brookfield and Solarvest not only reflects confidence in the renewable energy market in Malaysia, but also further promotes the development of integrated solar and storage projects in Southeast Asia, providing a demonstration for the deep integration of digital economy and green energy.Editor/Bian Wenjun
