The ± 800 kV UHV DC transmission project from Southeast Tibet to Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area was officially launched. This super project with a total investment of more than 200 billion yuan has a total length of 2681 kilometers, spans Xizang, Yunnan, Guangxi and Guangdong, and connects the three geographical ladders of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and South China hills. It is a flexible DC transmission project with the strongest transmission capacity and the most advanced technology in the world.

The project adopts innovative technologies such as ultra-high voltage multi terminal flexible DC and full half bridge hybrid converter, overcoming world-class challenges such as ultra-high altitude DC transmission and large-scale grid connection of new energy. The project crosses 197 kilometers of ultra-high altitude areas and 37 kilometers of uninhabited areas, achieving for the first time the transmission of electricity across three geographical tiers, demonstrating China's leading strength in the field of ultra-high voltage transmission.

This project will annually deliver 43 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity to the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption by 12 million tons and carbon dioxide emissions by 33 million tons. This transmission capacity will effectively alleviate the power supply and demand contradiction in the eastern region, increase the power supply capacity of Guangzhou and Shenzhen by 5 million kilowatts each, and enhance the renewable energy consumption weight of the Greater Bay Area by 3.8 percentage points.

The engineering construction is jointly promoted by Southern Power Grid and State Grid, with an investment of over 150 billion yuan in the supporting "water, wind, and solar integrated" power base. During the peak construction period, the project will directly create over 100000 job opportunities, driving the coordinated development of upstream and downstream industrial chains such as power equipment manufacturing and engineering construction. As a key project in the 14th Five Year Plan for power development, this project will not only promote coordinated development between the eastern and western regions, but also provide a Chinese solution for global energy transformation that can be referenced.
