Recently, the feasibility study report of the Sichuan Provincial Water Diversion Project from Da to Min has been officially approved by the National Development and Reform Commission, marking a key breakthrough in the largest investment and longest route water diversion project in Sichuan's history. As the core project of Sichuan's water network backbone, "diverting water from Dadu River to Minjiang River" will build a new "water vein" between the Dadu River and Minjiang River basins, providing a solid water security guarantee for the high-quality development of the Chengdu Chongqing economic circle.

'Yinda Ji Min', as the name suggests, refers to diverting water from the Dadu River to supplement the Ji Min River basin. The project is located in western Sichuan, covering Ganzi Prefecture, Ya'an City, and Chengdu City. The total length of the water transmission line is 260.9 kilometers, consisting of a main line, a south main line, and a north main line. The project focuses on urban and rural living and industrial water supply, while also taking into account agricultural irrigation. It directly and indirectly benefits 8 cities and 43 counties (cities, districts) including Chengdu, Deyang, and Meishan. The design level year is expected to reach an average annual water supply of 1.523 billion cubic meters by 2050.
The total investment of the project is about 57.519 billion yuan, with a total construction period of 96 months. It is worth mentioning that the project will construct three kinetic energy recovery power stations during the water transmission process, with a total installed capacity of 388000 kilowatts, achieving dual utilization of water resources and energy.
The 'Yinda Ji Min' project is not only a water conservancy project, but also a challenge to the geological and engineering limits. The route needs to cross 7 regional fault zones and multiple large faults, facing 48 major technical challenges. At the perilous peak of Erlang Mountain in western Sichuan, the maximum burial depth of the water diversion tunnel reaches 2040 meters, equivalent to the height of six Chengdu Tianfu Panda Towers, making it the second largest deeply buried tunnel in domestic water conservancy engineering. The Lianhua Mountain Tunnel, with a total length of 40 kilometers, will break the record for the longest water diversion tunnel in Sichuan. The maximum diameter of the South Main Line water transmission pipeline is 3.6 meters, which will become the pipeline with the highest water transmission pressure in domestic water diversion projects.
'Guiding the Yangtze River to Minjiang' is a key link in Sichuan's water network system. After the completion of the project, the Chengdu Plain will form a dual water supply pattern with Minjiang River as the main source and Dadu River as the supplement, greatly improving regional water supply safety and drought resistance. According to estimates, the project will add 1.79 million acres of irrigated land, improve 5.91 million acres of irrigated land, and benefit 34.13 million people with water supply. The relevant person in charge of the Sichuan Provincial Department of Water Resources stated that the project has strategic significance for optimizing water resource allocation and strengthening water security in the Chengdu Chongqing region. It will provide basic support for building a national strategic hinterland and promoting high-quality development of the Chengdu Chongqing dual city economic circle.Editor/Cheng Liting
