The government of Valencia region in Spain recently announced a major investment plan worth 839 million euros, aimed at modernizing and expanding the Metrovalencia and Tram d'Alacant networks. As a core part of the 2026-2030 strategic plan of the Valencia government railway company, this investment is described as the largest in the company's history and is expected to significantly enhance the service capacity and coverage of both transportation systems.

This plan covers six key areas. 275 million euros will be used for comprehensive infrastructure upgrades, including the renovation of tunnels and intersections, upgrading of signal and communication systems, optimization of power systems, and expansion of maintenance workshops. Another 500 million euros was earmarked for repairing the facilities damaged in the rainstorm last October, especially the tracks, offices and workshop areas of Valencia South Station. At the same time, 185 million euros will be used to purchase 22 new light rail trains produced by Lestat Dele Railway Company, including 16 trains serving Metrovalencia and 6 trains equipped with Tram d'Alacant, and to continue purchasing additional vehicles from 2029 to meet future demand.

Improving passenger experience is also a key investment direction. 90 million euros will be used for the modernization of subway lines 1 and 2 stations, the construction of new passenger information systems, and the improvement of accessibility facilities. Although the specific budget for optimizing service frequency has not been announced, it will improve punctuality by adjusting the operating routes of Lines 1, 3, and 9, and achieve a basic 12 minute interval between trips on the ground network. The most forward-looking is the 240 million euro network expansion plan: Valencia will build an underground pedestrian walkway connecting Alarcon Station and Chativa Station, complete the dual track construction of Line 3, and construct new Lines 11 and 12 leading to the seaside and hospital; Alicante will build a central transfer hub, achieve dual track and electrification transformation of key road sections, and add new stations. After the completion of this system project, the transportation capacity of Metrovalencia is expected to increase by 15%, and the capacity of Tram d'Alacant will significantly increase by 25%. This historic investment will not only significantly improve the existing level of transportation services, but also inject new impetus into the sustainable development of the Valencia region by expanding network connections to key areas, making public transportation a core force in promoting regional integration and low-carbon travel.Editor/Cheng Liting
