Recently, the winning bid for the core section of the renovation and expansion project of Kunming Changshui International Airport was officially announced. With strong technical strength and rich experience in airport construction, China Construction Eighth Engineering Division successfully won multiple key projects such as GTC (Comprehensive Transportation Hub) curtain wall engineering, airfield runway and ancillary engineering, with a total bid amount exceeding 6.6 billion yuan. This winning bid marks the deep participation of China Construction Eighth Engineering Division in the upgrading and construction of hub airports in Southwest China. It will inject strong impetus into Kunming Changshui Airport to build an international aviation hub that radiates South Asia and Southeast Asia, and help Yunnan build a "radiation center for South Asia and Southeast Asia" transportation support system.
It is reported that the renovation and expansion project of Kunming Changshui International Airport is a key civil aviation project in the national "14th Five Year Plan" and one of the largest airport renovation and expansion projects in the southwest region. The total investment of the project exceeds 38 billion yuan, aiming to meet the growing demand for air transportation, enhance the airport's comprehensive support capacity and international competitiveness. The core project won by China Construction Eighth Engineering Division covers two key areas:

One of them is the curtain wall project of GTC comprehensive transportation hub. As a new landmark building of the airport, the total construction area of GTC is about 350000 square meters, integrating various transportation modes such as high-speed rail, subway, long-distance passenger transport, urban bus, and ride hailing, achieving seamless connection between air and rail transportation. The total construction area of the curtain wall project is about 86000 square meters, using a combination of "large-span curved glass curtain wall+aluminum veneer decoration". The design inspiration comes from "Yunnan Peacock Opening Screen", and through smooth lines and transparent materials, it creates a building appearance that combines regional cultural characteristics and modern technology. The project will face technical challenges such as large-span structure construction and precision control of irregular surface installation. China Construction Eighth Engineering Bureau will use advanced technologies such as BIM digital modeling, unmanned aerial vehicle surveying, and intelligent hoisting to ensure precise fit between curtain wall construction and building structure, presenting high standard visual effects and functional use.
The second is the airfield runway and ancillary works, including the construction of two 3600 meter long long long runways, two parallel taxiways and supporting connecting lanes, aprons and other facilities. The design standards meet the takeoff and landing requirements of 4F level large civil aviation aircraft. The project construction requires the completion of core processes such as earthwork excavation, foundation treatment, and pavement concrete paving, with a total pouring area of over 1.2 million square meters and an earthwork volume of over 8 million cubic meters. In response to the complex geological conditions and climate characteristics of Kunming area, the construction team will optimize the construction organization design, adopt special technologies such as permeable base and frost resistant concrete, and strengthen the smoothness and durability of the road surface; At the same time, supporting facilities such as navigation lights, communication and navigation, and perimeter security will be constructed to ensure that the airfield has efficient and safe operational support capabilities.

As a leading enterprise in the domestic infrastructure field, China Construction Eighth Engineering Division has a deep foundation in airport construction. It has participated in the construction of multiple large hub airports such as Beijing Daxing International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, and Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, accumulating rich experience and technical reserves in complex engineering construction. The winning bid for the core project of Kunming Changshui Airport is an important measure for China Construction Eighth Engineering Division to deeply cultivate the southwest market and implement the strategy of "building a strong transportation country". The project leader stated that the company will establish a professional project management team, strictly adhere to the principles of "safety first, quality first, and green construction", coordinate the progress of the project with ecological protection, and strive to build the project into a demonstration project of "smart airport, green airport, and humanistic airport".
From the perspective of regional development strategy, the construction of this winning project has profound significance. Kunming Changshui Airport, as a gateway hub airport in Southwest China, will achieve the goal of an annual passenger throughput of 95 million and a cargo and mail throughput of 1 million tons after the completion of renovation and expansion, further strengthening its core node position in the aviation network of South Asia and Southeast Asia. The completion of the GTC comprehensive transportation hub will connect the last mile of "air rail intermodal transportation" and greatly improve the convenience of passenger travel; The expansion of the airfield will enhance the airport's flight takeoff and landing support capacity, provide efficient transportation support for the development of regional economy and trade, culture and tourism industry, and help Yunnan better integrate into the "the Belt and Road" construction.

At present, China Construction Eighth Engineering Division has started the preliminary preparation work of the project, completed the review of construction drawings, technical scheme demonstration, and personnel and equipment allocation. Next, we will quickly advance the preliminary work such as site leveling and temporary facility construction to ensure that the project starts construction on schedule. It is expected that the related core projects will be completed and delivered by the end of 2027, laying a solid foundation for the overall operation of the renovation and expansion project of Kunming Changshui International Airport, and helping to achieve a leapfrog improvement in the aviation hub level in the southwest region.Editro/Bian Wenjun
