Against the backdrop of the global aviation industry's recovery and increasingly fierce regional competition, world-class airport clusters have become a strategic pivot driving the economic development of major countries. Faced with the growing demand for international exchanges and internal circulation in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, accelerating the construction of a multi hub coordinated aviation system is not only an inevitable requirement for implementing national strategies, but also a key measure to seize the high ground of future development. In this macro perspective, the latest progress of Guangzhou's new airport marks a new stage of substantive construction for the construction of the world-class airport cluster in the Greater Bay Area, officially moving from the planning blueprint.

Recently, the Guangdong Provincial Public Resource Trading Platform has released multiple bidding notices, marking that the core projects of the terminal pile foundation, earthwork and construction supervision of Guangzhou New Airport have entered the early stage of construction. This new airport, positioned as an international aviation hub, is tentatively scheduled to start construction by the end of 2025. It will not only reshape the regional aviation landscape, but also inject new airport momentum into the economic and social development of the Greater Bay Area.
According to the announcement, the Guangzhou New Airport project will be constructed with an annual passenger throughput of 30 million and a cargo and mail throughput of 500000 tons. The airport's flight zone level is the highest 4E level, and two long-distance parallel runways will be constructed. The terminal building has a construction area of 325000 square meters and is equipped with 128 parking spaces. What is particularly noteworthy is its advanced design for air rail intermodal transportation: the main building of T1 terminal will be partially built on top of the railway station building, and will be connected to the track station hall through a comprehensive transportation center, providing passengers with a seamless transfer experience.
The pile foundation and earthwork engineering of the terminal building in this bidding are tentatively scheduled to start on December 30, 2025, and are planned to be completed in October 2026. The total planned construction period of the entire terminal is 60 months, indicating that this future hub will be completed and put into use from the end of the 15th Five Year Plan to the beginning of the 16th Five Year Plan. When the pile driver rings on the land of Gaoming District, Foshan City, it not only marks the prelude to the construction of Guangzhou's new airport, but also a new drum call for the Greater Bay Area to connect with the world. This aviation hub, which shoulders the national strategic mission, will form a strong synergy with Guangzhou Baiyun Airport in the future, effectively unleashing the enormous potential of regional aviation resources. Its construction will not only add an airport in physical space, but also create a world-class urban cluster for the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area in terms of economic geography, and build a stronger and more efficient air gateway.Editor/Cheng Liting
