As the global energy transition accelerates, China's layout in the field of clean energy is constantly deepening. On November 30, 2025, the mobilization meeting for the construction of the Yongxin Pumped Storage Power Station project in Jiangxi Province was held, marking the official entry of this national key energy project into the construction phase during the 14th Five Year Plan period.

This project, with a total investment of 7.823 billion yuan, is not only an important step in the energy structure adjustment of Jiangxi Province, but also a key measure for China to achieve its dual carbon goals and build a new type of power system.

Against the backdrop of global efforts to address climate change and energy security challenges, pumped storage energy, as the most mature technology, economically optimal, and large-scale development ready flexible power source for power systems, is becoming a key focus of energy strategic layouts in various countries.

Reduce millions of tons of carbon emissions

The Yongxin Pumped Storage Power Station has a designed installed capacity of 1.2 million kilowatts, equivalent to the scale of a medium-sized thermal power station, but it is a completely clean energy facility.

The power station consists of four reversible water pump turbine generators with a single capacity of 300000 kilowatts. After completion, the annual power generation will reach 1.296 billion kilowatt hours.

The environmental benefits brought by such a scale of power generation are very significant. The power station can replace approximately 428000 tons of coal annually, reducing sulfur dioxide emissions by 1600 tons, carbon dioxide emissions by 1.0668 million tons, nitrogen oxides by 16100 tons, and particulate matter by 5800 tons.

This means that this power station can reduce carbon emissions equivalent to about 200000 cars driving for one year in a single year, which plays an important role in improving local air quality and protecting the ecological environment.

Promote the consumption of new energy

In today's rapidly developing new energy, the special value of pumped storage power stations is increasingly prominent. It is like a giant power bank that can effectively solve the grid connection problem of intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind power and photovoltaics.

The operating principle of the power station is simple and efficient: during low electricity consumption in the power grid, surplus electricity is used to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir for storage; During peak electricity consumption, water will be released to generate electricity and meet the demand of the power grid.

This flexible adjustment capability is particularly important for regions like Jiangxi Province, where the proportion of clean energy is constantly increasing. With the rapid growth of wind and photovoltaic installed capacity, the demand for regulated power sources in the power grid is becoming increasingly urgent.

After the completion of Yongxin pumped storage power station, it will significantly improve the consumption capacity of Jiangxi power grid for new energy such as wind and solar power, as well as external electricity, providing strong support for the optimization of Jiangxi's energy structure.

Drive comprehensive development of the region

During the construction period, the power station project will create a large number of job opportunities and drive local residents to increase their income. It is estimated that the peak period of project construction will directly provide over 3000 job opportunities and indirectly drive tens of thousands of related positions.
