The Qianshan Pumped Storage Project is located in Qianshan County, Shangrao City, and its geographical location itself is highly strategic. It is located in the hinterland of eastern Jiangxi, with moderate distance from core cities such as Shangrao, Yingtan, and Fuzhou, making it easy to connect to the regional main power grid and optimize energy allocation.

From a functional perspective, pumped storage power stations are known as the super power banks and stabilizers of the power grid. It uses surplus electricity to pump water from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir, converting it into gravitational potential energy for storage; During peak electricity consumption or when the power grid needs it, water will be released to generate electricity. This characteristic makes it play multiple key roles in the Jiangxi power grid: firstly, peak shaving and valley filling, smoothing the power load curve, effectively alleviating peak power supply pressure; The second is emergency backup, which can be quickly activated in case of sudden power grid failures to ensure power supply safety; The third is to cooperate with the consumption of new energy, which is its increasingly prominent core value.

In recent years, the energy structure in Jiangxi has undergone profound changes. As of July 2025, the installed capacity of new energy such as wind power and photovoltaics in the province has reached 34.8 million kilowatts, accounting for 46.9% of the total installed power supply, surpassing thermal power to become the largest power source in history. According to the announcement from the Jiangxi Provincial Development and Reform Commission, China General Nuclear Power Wind Power Co., Ltd., as the selected unit, will bear the full cycle responsibility for the investment, construction, and operation of the project. The project has set a clear timetable: the selected unit must complete the investment decision within 6 months after receiving the notification and ensure that the project enters the construction phase in 2026. The project development and operation period is set at 40 years, demonstrating the expectation of long-term operation and return.

The construction of the Qianshan Pumped Storage Power Station has significance far beyond just the power station itself.
