On the banks of the Qujiang River, Guang'an Port is presenting a busy scene: cargo ships are orderly docked, lifting equipment is operating efficiently, and batches of chemical raw materials are transported from here to trucks and sent to surrounding parks. This is not only a port for cargo transfer, but also a key logistics node in the construction of the Chengdu Chongqing economic circle. How can Guang'an Port achieve leapfrog development and become a "logistics engine" to promote regional cost reduction and efficiency improvement, from being constrained by waterway conditions and facing the dilemma of "ships waiting for water" in the past to the coordinated development of water, road, rail, and air multimodal transportation today?

Recently, purified terephthalic acid (PTA) transported from Zhangjiagang to Guang'an Xinqiao Chemical Industry Park is being transported by short haul barge at Guang'an Port. As a cross regional logistics node of the Chengdu Chongqing economic circle and an important pivot of Chongqing's inland opening hub, Guang'an Port has ranked among the top three in terms of water transportation indicators in the province and the first in the Northeast Sichuan port group for three consecutive years.

Cracking the 'waiting for ships' problem highlights the cost advantage of water transportation

In the past, over 98% of goods in Guang'an and surrounding areas relied on road transportation, resulting in high costs. Since the opening of Guang'an Port, efforts have been made to promote the "launching" of water suitable goods. However, due to fluctuations in the water level of the Jialing River and the navigation efficiency of hydropower stations, the development was once limited. To this end, Guang'an Port has innovatively implemented the "top push+relay" fleet transportation mode, combining the use of warehouses and natural waterway sections to improve navigation efficiency and reduce risks. With the continuous improvement of infrastructure - including Class III ship locks, 1000 ton berths, class III waterway regulation of Qujiang River, and the use of new energy ships - the cost advantage of water transport is gradually emerging. For example, a certain enterprise can save about 75 yuan per ton of freight through Guang'an Port water transportation compared to road transportation, resulting in significant cost savings under economies of scale.

Build multimodal transportation and weave a dense logistics network

The development of Guang'an Port is not limited to water transportation. Guang'an is accelerating the construction of a "water, public, rail, and air" multimodal transportation system around the goal of building an important pivot for Sichuan Chongqing shipping.

Highway: Cooperate with Chongqing Guoyuan Port to establish a "waterless port", achieving "one-time inspection and full area customs clearance", and have shipped over 260 TEUs of goods.

Railway: Build a new western land sea corridor train (Guang'an) assembly center, and recently there have been trains carrying local products directly to Southeast Asia.

Aviation: Jointly build the Jiangbei Airport urban cargo terminal with Sichuan Airlines Logistics to achieve efficient customs clearance of air cargo.

Through the intelligent logistics information platform, Guang'an Port is promoting the "convergence of logistics resources" and the "one-stop" transportation services.

Data witnesses effectiveness, regional collaboration continues to deepen

Since the opening of container shipping from Guang'an to Chongqing in 2021, the total number of voyages has exceeded 470, with a container throughput of nearly 10000 TEUs, and the average annual growth rate of various indicators has exceeded 50%. The relevant person in charge of Guang'an Transportation Bureau stated that as the logistics sub center of the northern part of Chongqing metropolitan area, Guang'an Port will continue to deepen cross provincial logistics cooperation with Chongqing and further integrate into the regional coordinated development pattern. The upgrading path of Guang'an Port, from breaking through the bottleneck of waterways to coordinating multiple transportation modes, is a vivid practice of Guang'an's "same city integration circle" strategy. With the accelerated integration of the "channel network, logistics network, and digital network", Guang'an Port has not only achieved its own leap from an "inland port" to a "modern hub", but also injected lasting momentum into industrial collaboration in Northeast Sichuan and even the Chengdu Chongqing region with its efficient logistics system. In the future, it will continue to play a key role in promoting more goods to connect the river and sea, and helping the regional economy move towards higher quality. Editor/Xu Shengpeng
