Since its operation in April 2025, the Western Land Sea New Corridor Chongqing Guizhou Guangxi Hydrogen Corridor has been highly regarded by all sectors. As of the end of February 2026, the main and branch lines of the hydrogen corridor have operated nearly 7000 hydrogen heavy-duty trucks, successfully connecting the key cross-border channels for green logistics to go global and connect with ASEAN in the southwest region. This provides a highly valuable practical case for solving the problem of disconnection between green hydrogen production and use and promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of transportation. Recently, the Chongqing Western Land Sea New Corridor Hydrogen Energy Full Chain Low Carbon Transformation Project has been successfully selected for the National Energy Administration's hydrogen energy pilot list.

Moving from normalized domestic operations to new breakthroughs in cross-border logistics

The Western Land Sea New Corridor Hydrogen Corridor, with Chongqing Guizhou Qinzhou in Guangxi as the main line, spans 3 provinces and 10 prefecture level cities, with a total length of 1150 kilometers. The project jumps out of the single mode of traditional hydrogen energy pilot, focuses on the application scenario of cross regional trunk logistics, effectively connects inland hubs, industrial bases and coastal ports, and realizes the deep integration of hydrogen energy transportation with international logistics and cross-border trade.

With the collaborative efforts of the governments and enterprises in Chongqing, Guizhou, and Guangxi, the construction of the channel has been rapidly promoted and effectively implemented. In April 2025, the first cross regional hydrogen energy heavy truck trunk line in China was officially put into operation. That year, a total of 6143 hydrogen energy heavy trucks were operated on the main branch line, and the transportation of goods was expanded to four major categories: laptops, chemical products, food and beverage, and textile raw materials. Three major branch line operation scenarios were also established: short haul, collection and distribution, and hub operation.

Based on the stable and normalized operation of domestic trunk lines, the hydrogen corridor is accelerating its extension into the cross-border logistics field. In January 2026, a hydrogen cross-border highway bus carrying Chongqing made laptops departed from Chongqing, passed through Guizhou and Guangxi, and arrived directly at the Friendship Pass port, successfully reaching Yi'an, Vietnam, completing a key breakthrough in the cross-border branch line and achieving seamless integration with the China ASEAN cross-border highway bus network. Data shows that by 2025, Chongqing will complete the transportation of 327700 TEUs of goods through the Western Land Sea New Channel, a year-on-year increase of 30%. Among them, the volume and value of cross-border road shuttle bus shipments will increase by 90% and 306% respectively, and the supporting role of green logistics in regional economic and trade development will continue to strengthen.Building a full chain hydrogen energy industry ecosystem

The Chongqing Guizhou Guangxi Hydrogen Corridor does not adopt the traditional development model of relying on subsidies for hydrogen energy pilot projects. Instead, it closely follows the direction of green hydrogen industry development, innovatively creates a 422 demonstration system, and builds a dual platform system of hydrogen vehicle management and carbon management around the two goals of thousands of hydrogen energy trucks and billions of hydrogen energy industry clusters. With the actual demand for mainline logistics, it drives the full industry chain of hydrogen production, storage and transportation to land, forming a flexible source organization system that is suitable for public transportation, railway transportation, and sea transportation, effectively solving the problem of poor connection between green hydrogen production and use.

At present, all four hydrogen refueling stations planned for the first phase of the project have been completed and put into use, achieving full coverage of important logistics nodes in Chongqing, Guizhou, and Guangxi. China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation takes the lead in building a stable and reliable hydrogen supply network to provide sufficient energy guarantee for long-distance hydrogen energy transportation. In terms of policy support, the Chengdu Chongqing Hydrogen Corridor and the Chongqing Guizhou Guangxi Hydrogen Energy Mainline have achieved interconnection and intercommunication. Hydrogen vehicles in the Sichuan section enjoy the policy of reducing tolls on highways. Chongqing has also issued a special layout plan for hydrogen refueling stations, listing the areas along the corridor as key construction areas to comprehensively reduce project operating costs.

Entering a new stage of normalized operation in 2027

This year's government work report clearly proposes to cultivate emerging economic growth points such as hydrogen energy and green fuels, and the 15th Five Year Plan also includes green hydrogen energy as a key new economic growth point for development. Adhering to the new development requirements of the 15th Five Year Plan, the hydrogen corridor will accelerate the layout of the second phase of hydrogen refueling stations, and promote the completion and operation of stations such as Banan, Qinzhou, and Pingxiang; Relying on the channel 13+2 cooperation mechanism, connect with important node cities such as Chengdu and Kunming, and further expand network coverage; Simultaneously building a digital service platform for hydrogen energy supply to achieve precise and intelligent control of hydrogen energy supply.

According to the planning goals, it is expected that by 2027, the number of hydrogen refueling stations along the hydrogen corridor of the Western Land Sea New Corridor will exceed 40, more than 1500 hydrogen fuel cell trucks will be promoted and applied, carbon emissions will be reduced by more than 4000 tons, and an integrated collaborative operation system of source organization, hydrogen vehicle operation, and hydrogen supply guarantee will be fully established, promoting hydrogen energy logistics to enter a new stage of large-scale and normalized operation from the pilot demonstration stage. From the coordinated linkage of Chongqing, Guizhou, and Guangxi to the radiation of the entire Southwest region, from domestic multimodal transportation to cross-border interconnection, this hydrogen energy logistics trunk line that runs through the Southwest hinterland has accurately solved the industry's common problems of production and use disconnection and spatial mismatch in the green hydrogen industry, broken down the barriers between green hydrogen application and trunk logistics, explored practical and feasible application scenarios for the large-scale landing of the hydrogen energy industry, and contributed replicable and promotable Southwest experience to the promotion and application of hydrogen energy in the national transportation field, cultivating green low-carbon new quality productivity, assisting in the realization of dual carbon goals, and accelerating the construction of a strong transportation country.Editor/Gong Ziwei
