Recently, the construction of an electrified external power supporting project for the Qinghai Tibet Railway, with a total investment of 14.902 billion yuan and spanning Qinghai and Xizang, was officially started. This plan is a major project to build 3481 kilometers of new lines, aiming to provide stable and green power support for the comprehensive electrification transformation of Tianlu. It will not only directly improve the transportation efficiency of the world's highest altitude railway, but also carry the strategic mission of optimizing the high-altitude power grid structure and promoting the consumption of clean energy, marking a new stage of green and efficient transportation and energy development in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.

Drive the Tianlu Efficiency Revolution

As the heart and artery of the electrification renovation of the Golmud section of the Qinghai Tibet Railway, the core value of the external power supporting project lies in injecting strong power into railway transportation. At present, the transportation pressure of the Golmud Lhasa section of the Qinghai Tibet Railway, which is the only external railway channel in Xizang, has reached its limit. As of the end of July this year, it has transported over 46.89 million passengers and over 100 million tons of goods, with single line design capacity becoming saturated and equipment aging becoming increasingly prominent.

Electrification transformation is the fundamental way to break this bottleneck. This project will directly meet the huge load demand of electric locomotive traction by constructing a huge power grid covering voltage levels of 110 to 750 kV. After the renovation is completed, there will be a qualitative leap in train speed, traction weight, and transportation efficiency, and the transportation bottleneck for entering and leaving Tibet in the Qinghai direction will be effectively alleviated. What is even more exciting is that, with the renovation of station facilities, the Fuxing high-speed train is expected to run on the entire line of the Gela section in the future, truly realizing the entry of high-speed trains into Tibet, greatly reducing the travel time from Lhasa to Xining, and profoundly changing the travel mode of plateau people and the regional economic spatial and temporal pattern.

Building a new power system for the plateau

The profound impact of this project goes far beyond the railway itself. It is a systematic empowerment of the energy structure and ecological sustainable development of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. The construction of the project will directly optimize and strengthen the main grid structure of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau power grid, especially enhancing the power supply capacity and reliability of the vast area north of Lhasa, providing a solid energy guarantee for the economic and social development along the route.

More importantly, it provides a crucial export channel and local consumption market for the abundant clean energy sources such as wind and solar energy in northern Tibet. After the completion of the project, it can effectively promote the large-scale development of these clean resources, and directly use green electricity in the huge energy consuming field of railway transportation, significantly improving the green content of energy utilization. This will not only directly help Xizang and even the country to achieve the dual carbon goals, but also be a key step to promote the plateau region to build a new power system with new energy as the main body, and achieve the same frequency resonance between the green transformation of transportation and the clean development of the energy system.
