The global energy transition has reached a milestone moment - China's independently developed 30 MW pure hydrogen gas turbine "Jupiter One" has successfully achieved pure hydrogen power generation and stable operation in Qipanjing Industrial Park, Etuoke Banner, Inner Mongolia, marking the full implementation of the world's first 30 MW "electricity hydrogen electricity" empirical demonstration project from blueprint, and China's leap from following to leading in high-power hydrogen power generation technology.

As the world's most powerful and technologically advanced pure hydrogen gas turbine, "Jupiter One" was jointly developed by Mingyang Hydrogen Combustion, a subsidiary of Mingyang Group, and more than 60 industrial chain enterprises. It has overcome three world-class technical challenges in hydrogen combustion, namely "easy backfire, strong oscillation, and high emissions". The R&D team has designed a micro premixed combustion chamber through multiple rounds of aerodynamic and thermal iteration, and used 3D printing technology to manufacture an integrated combustion chamber nozzle. The hydrogen flame speed is precisely controlled within a safe threshold, and nitrogen oxide emissions are reduced to below 50mg/Nm ³, meeting the environmental standards of natural gas units. The combined cycle thermal efficiency of the unit in the external heating environment reaches 70%, the comprehensive conversion efficiency of "electricity hydrogen electricity" is 35%, and the hourly power generation can reach 48000 kilowatt hours, which is enough to meet the daily electricity demand of 5500 households. Compared with the same power thermal power unit, it can reduce carbon emissions by more than 200000 tons per year, equivalent to the carbon sequestration of planting 1.11 million adult trees.

This project innovatively constructs a complete closed-loop model of "green electricity to green hydrogen, green hydrogen to generate electricity again", deeply integrates wind power, photovoltaic and electrolytic water hydrogen production systems, and successfully solves the problem of volatility in new energy "eating from the sky". When there is surplus wind and solar power generation, the excess electricity is converted into green hydrogen with a purity of 99.999% through electrolysis of water for storage; When there is a peak in electricity consumption or insufficient wind and solar power output, hydrogen is converted back into stable electricity through gas turbines and connected to the grid. A single unit can absorb the abandoned electricity of a 1 million kilowatt wind and solar project. The supporting hydrogen storage system can achieve cross seasonal energy storage for up to 180 days, completely breaking the time limit of traditional lithium battery energy storage. As one of the first national level hydrogen energy pilot projects, its green hydrogen products comply with the EU ISCC EU RFNBO standard, providing replicable industrial grade solutions for large-scale consumption of new energy.

This operation not only verifies the reliability of pure hydrogen gas turbines in real engineering environments, but also opens up an industrial path for large-scale green hydrogen consumption - a single unit consumes about 10000 tons of green hydrogen per year, equivalent to the annual hydrogen consumption of 50000 hydrogen fuel cell passenger cars, which will effectively drive the upstream green hydrogen industry to reduce costs and increase efficiency. In the future, this technology can be widely applied in multiple scenarios such as power grid peak shaving, distributed energy, comprehensive energy supply in industrial parks, and backup power supply for green data centers, while providing an economically feasible solution for low-carbon transformation of existing gas turbine power plants. Industry experts point out that China's engineering breakthrough in the field of 30 MW pure hydrogen gas turbines is at least 10 years ahead of similar technologies in the European Union and the United States, contributing to the "Chinese solution" for the global energy zero carbon transformation, and also helping China seize the high ground of hydrogen energy technology and promote the upgrading of the energy equipment industry.Editor/Bian Wenjun
