The Swedish infrastructure management agency TTrafikverket has issued the first two construction contracts for the Eastern Connection project, which costs 11.03 billion Swedish kronor. The project aims to construct a 160 kilometer high-speed railway line, starting from Yana in the southwest of Stockholm, passing through Norrk ö ping, and ending at Linkoping.

These two turnkey contracts cover a section of approximately 60 kilometers from Arna to Skavsta, and were won by Germany's Hochtief Infrastructure and France's Bouygues Travaux Publications, respectively, responsible for the construction of the Wagnard and Skavsta sections. The project is expected to be completed by 2035.

Trafikverket stated that the reason for awarding these contracts is to enable suppliers to participate in the early stages, contribute their professional knowledge and experience, in order to strengthen project implementation and achieve better results. The eastern railway will include a double track line with a maximum speed of 250 kilometers per hour. About 25% of the new route will be built within elevated bridges or tunnels. This new route will run parallel to the northern section of the Stockholm Malmo main line, helping to alleviate traffic congestion and shorten travel time.Editor/Cheng Liting
