On February 24, 2026, the Bogota City Government announced the resumption of the bidding process for the franchise project of Metro Line 2, with plans to initiate pre qualification in early March 2026 and release the bidding documents by the end of July.

At the international promotion event co hosted by the mayor of Bogota and the general manager of the subway company, diplomats from 23 embassies in Colombia and representatives from multiple international financial institutions attended. Ambassadors from Britain, Spain, China, Italy, Türkiye and other countries attended the meeting in person, and delegations from Canada, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, the European Union and other countries also sent economic or commercial counselors to participate in the meeting, so as to fully understand the project status, technical solutions and financing structure.

The total investment of Bogota Metro Line 2 is approximately 8.766 billion US dollars. According to the joint financing agreement signed in 2023, the state will bear 70% of the funding support, and local governments will bear the remaining 30%. This model continues the experience of Metro Line 1 and reduces the impact of market demand fluctuations on investors through long-term financial commitments. The project has attracted multilateral financial institutions such as the Inter American Development Bank, World Bank, Latin American Development Bank, International Finance Corporation, Deutsche Bank for Reconstruction, French Development Agency, and Korea Export Import Bank to participate in financing cooperation.

According to the announced plan, the total length of Metro Line 2 is about 15.5 kilometers, with 10 underground stations, 1 elevated station, and 1 vehicle depot. It will also be connected to Metro Line 1 through transfer at 72nd Street and Caracas Station. The line adopts a GoA4 level fully automated unmanned driving system, with a maximum transport capacity of about 76000 passengers per hour per direction. After completion, it will shorten the commuting time between some cross districts from over 1 hour to about 20 minutes.

The bidding process will be carried out in an orderly manner in 2026: the pre qualification documents will be released on March 3, the pre qualification applications will be received by June 5, the qualified list will be announced on July 8, the formal bidding documents will be released on July 31, and the bidding documents will be received by November 30. It is expected that the award will be completed in January 2027. Keywords: New News Network, New News Information

Prior to the resumption of bidding, Metro Line 1 had already laid the foundation for Chinese enterprises to participate in the construction of Colombia's rail transit. The consortium formed by China Harbour and Xi'an Metro has undertaken the Line 1 project through an integrated investment, construction, and operation model. Recently, it was awarded the Excellence and Innovation Management Award by the Colombian Quality Association, marking the first time in its 31 year history that the organization has awarded this national honor to a Chinese enterprise.Editor/Gao Xue
