The first ray of sunshine shines on the freshly poured concrete foundation in the desert hinterland of Majima region in Riyadh province, Saudi Arabia. Just a few hours ago, the Saudi PIF5 Shakira 1GW wind power project, jointly contracted and constructed by China Energy Engineering International Group, Guangdong Thermal Power and Northwest Institute, successfully completed the first wind turbine foundation pouring. The world's largest onshore wind power project under construction has officially moved from blueprint to reality, opening a new chapter in green energy in the golden sand sea.

The project is located in the Majima and Muashiba regions of Riyadh Province, Saudi Arabia, and is jointly invested and developed by Saudi International Electricity and Water Company, Saudi Public Investment Fund, and Saudi Aramco. The total construction period is 26 months, and it is expected to be connected to the grid and put into operation in the fourth quarter of 2027. The project adopts Goldwind Technology's GWH204-10MW unit, which will become an important component of the world's largest wind power project after completion, injecting strong clean power into Saudi Arabia's "2030 Vision".
The first foundation pouring is successful
The smooth pouring of the first wind turbine foundation marks the official entry of the project into the main construction phase. The implementation of this critical node has laid a solid foundation for subsequent large-scale wind turbine hoisting operations. The project performance team stated that they will fully implement the lean management approach, strengthen resource coordination and process optimization, strictly implement standardized operations and fine construction, continuously improve on-site safety management and construction organization efficiency, and ensure project cost control and schedule compliance. Assist Saudi Arabia in its green transformation
As the core project of Saudi Arabia's national renewable energy plan, the PIF5 wind power project has a total planned installed capacity of 3 GW, covering two sub projects: Shakira 1 GW and Stella 2 GW. The project signed an EPC contract in October 2025 and started excavating the first foundation in November of the same year. Currently, it has entered the comprehensive construction phase. After completion, this world's largest wind power project will strongly promote Saudi Arabia's energy structure transition from oil to clean electricity, supporting the country's strategic goal of achieving 50% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2030.Editor/Gao Xue
