Against the backdrop of the national dual carbon strategy and the construction of a new power system, a new energy landmark has been added to the banks of the Yellow River.

On March 31, 2026, CEEC Gezhouba Electromechanical Company successfully won the bid for the installation of electromechanical equipment for the first Yellow River pumped storage power station project in China, the Niushoushan Pumped Storage Power Station in Ningxia.

The Niushoushan Pumped Storage Power Station in Ningxia is located on the western foot of Niushoushan on the right bank of the Yellow River Qingtongxia Reservoir in Qingtongxia City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. It is the first pumped storage power station in China to use Yellow River water as a water source, and also the first pumped storage power station in Ningxia. The total installed capacity of the power station is 1 million kilowatts, and four vertical mixed flow reversible water pump turbine units with a single unit capacity of 250000 kilowatts are designed and installed.

As a key project of the 14th Five Year Plan and one of the top ten engineering projects in Ningxia, the construction of this power station has strategic significance for optimizing the energy structure in the northwest region and ensuring the safety of the power grid. After the completion of the power station, it will mainly undertake tasks such as peak shaving, valley filling, frequency regulation, phase modulation, and emergency backup for the Ningxia power grid. It is expected that the annual power generation will reach 1.148 billion kilowatt hours, and the annual pumping electricity consumption will be 1.531 billion kilowatt hours. This will effectively enhance the grid's ability to absorb intermittent new energy such as wind power and photovoltaics, providing solid support for Ningxia to build a new power system and promote the green and low-carbon transformation of energy. Keywords: energy storage, pumped storage power station

From the blueprint of the Yellow River to the super stabilizer of the Northwest Power Grid, the construction of the Niushoushan Pumped Storage Power Station in Ningxia is not only a technical breakthrough, but also a profound transformation of the energy structure. As four 250000 kilowatt units continue to rotate day and night in the future, they will not only bear the responsibility of peak shaving and valley filling, but also become a key link connecting unstable new energy sources such as wind and solar power with reliable electricity for thousands of households.Editor/Cheng Liting
