In 2026, the release of a heavyweight white paper at the India Fixed Energy Storage Exhibition shook the global energy storage industry. Just a few years ago, India's cumulative installed capacity of energy storage was less than 1GWh, almost negligible. Now, a joint forecast from the Indian Energy Storage Alliance and a customized energy solutions company directly outlines a nearly steep growth curve - by 2033, this number will soar to 346 GWh.

This is not an optimistic deduction in the laboratory, but a realistic judgment based on the 92 GWh prepared projects and 69 new bidding projects. A new wave of energy storage explosion has really arrived.

India's energy storage bidding volume surges by 35% in one year

The white paper points out that under the joint promotion of policy goals and regulatory reforms, India is rapidly rising as a leader in global energy storage deployment. In just the past year, India's energy storage sector has launched 69 new bidding projects for battery storage systems, with a total capacity of 102 gigawatt hours, an increase of 35% compared to 2024 and almost twice the bidding volume of the previous year.

The continuously expanding project reserves fully demonstrate the strong interest of investors in this field and also indicate that the Indian energy storage market is accelerating towards maturity. As of now, 92 gigawatt hours of battery energy storage system projects are in the preparatory stage, laying a solid foundation for explosive growth in the coming years.

Energy storage becomes the core of renewable energy transformation

India's power system is facing unprecedented growth and flexibility demands, with peak grid load fluctuations reaching 90 gigawatts, "said Saksena, Chairman and Managing Director of India Power Grid Corporation, at a white paper launch

Thanks to policy support and cost reduction, battery energy storage and pumped storage are rapidly integrating nationwide. With the decline in prices and technological advancements, energy storage will become the core of renewable energy transformation, not only ensuring 24-hour uninterrupted power supply, but also unlocking new value streams for the industry. Pumped storage energy is also developing rapidly, with its cumulative capacity expected to increase from 7 gigawatts in 2025 to 107 gigawatts in 2033.

Benchmark 346GWh, radical 544GWh

Looking ahead, the white paper provides growth forecasts for two scenarios. Under the baseline scenario, India's fixed energy storage installed capacity is expected to surge from less than 1 gigawatt hour to 346 gigawatt hours by 2033. If the policy implementation continues to strengthen, this number will further climb to 544 gigawatt hours.

This explosive growth is attributed to a series of forward-looking policy measures: energy storage obligations, gradual implementation of differential subsidies, formal recognition of energy storage in the 2025 Electricity Revision Rules, and incentive measures such as 100% exemption from charging fees for India's transmission system. These policies collectively enhance the investment attractiveness and bank financing capability of the energy storage sector, laying a solid foundation for market explosion.

The Chairman of the Indian Energy Storage Alliance commented, "This white paper is both a milestone and a call to action. It provides the strategic clarity needed for India to achieve its vision of 500 gigawatts of non fossil energy generation by 2030. Energy storage will serve as the cornerstone of a flexible and reliable grid, supporting the achievement of India's energy transition goals." Editor/Yang Beihua
