Recently, the first demonstration project of compressed air and flywheel energy storage integration in Liaoning Province, undertaken by China Railway 18th Bureau Group Beijing Engineering Co., Ltd. - the Liaoning Fushun Compressed Air+Flywheel Energy Storage Project Traffic Tunnel, has officially started construction, and the project has achieved important phased results.

Outstanding advantages of energy storage technology

Compressed air energy storage technology is known as the stabilizer and super power bank of the new power system. It has no special restrictions on geographical conditions and is similar to pumped storage power stations in terms of functionality, cost, response speed, and operating efficiency. It has the characteristics of long service life, large energy storage capacity, flexible energy storage cycle, and high degree of freedom in site selection. It is a large-scale energy storage technology with great promotion value. Flywheel energy storage is an energy storage technology that converts electrical energy and high-speed rotating mechanical energy of the flywheel through a bidirectional motor that operates in a reciprocal manner.

Project Overview and Scale Construction

The project is located in Xinbin Manchu Autonomous County, Fushun City, Liaoning Province, with a planned land area of approximately 60000 square meters. It adopts a "compressed air+flywheel" hybrid energy storage technology solution, with a total installed capacity of 100 megawatts and an energy storage capacity of 400 megawatt hours. A 10 megawatt flywheel energy storage system will be constructed simultaneously.

China Railway 18th Bureau is responsible for the construction of the underground gas storage project, which includes core structures such as gas storage chambers, sealing plugs, and access tunnels. The gas storage facility adopts a large cross-section cavern with a circular layout, with an excavation diameter of nearly 17 meters, a steel lining welding total length of 12000 meters, and a concrete pouring volume of over 60000 cubic meters. The engineering technology requirements are high and the construction process is complex.

Construction of traffic tunnel entrance

The access tunnel for this construction project adopts a standard two lane design, with a total length of about 267 meters. It is precisely connected to the existing water conveyance tunnel branch and is a key channel and material transportation "artery" for the subsequent construction of the main gas storage chamber. The project team adheres to the concept of refined management, coordinates and deploys in advance, formulates precise measures, and meticulously deploys key aspects such as construction organization optimization, resource allocation guarantee, reasonable schedule arrangement, and technical scheme demonstration. After multiple studies and improvements, the special construction plan has been perfected, providing a solid guarantee for the smooth construction of the tunnel.
