On April 7, 2026, the offshore wind power project at the North L site on the Shandong Peninsula, invested and constructed by China Huaneng Group, achieved full capacity grid connected power generation. The project site is located 70 kilometers offshore with an average depth of over 50 meters, making it the deepest and farthest offshore wind farm in China. The project deployed 42 12 megawatt high-capacity wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 504000 kilowatts. This milestone event marks a significant leap from following to leading in core areas such as deep sea complex environment survey, ultra large unit integration, and ultra long distance construction in China.

Four pipeline supports set the highest record in China

To cope with the harsh sea conditions of deep sea winds, high waves, and complex geology, the project team innovatively adopted a four pile duct frame wind turbine foundation scheme. The highest foundation structure reached 83.9 meters, becoming the highest record for wind turbine foundations of the same type in China. This design is like creating a deep-sea anchor for each wind turbine, ensuring safe and stable operation in extreme sea conditions. During the construction process, the project integrated Beidou high-precision positioning and intelligent assisted sinking technology, achieving millimeter level control of underwater pile sinking, and significantly reducing the installation time of a single wind turbine by nearly 40%, creating a new record for efficient construction in deep and distant seas.

Exceeding 95.6 kilometers of ultra long submarine cable laying

One of the biggest challenges facing the project is the 95.6-kilometer energy artery laying task. Faced with the challenge of laying ultra long distance submarine cables, the project team utilized advanced technology combining drones and artificial magnetic fields to complete the laying of submarine cables with high quality, ensuring reliable power transmission. This technological breakthrough has accumulated valuable experience for the development of offshore wind power at longer distances in the future. From basic construction to submarine cable laying, the project has achieved innovative breakthroughs in multiple technical aspects, demonstrating China's comprehensive strength in the field of offshore wind power engineering. Annual power generation of 1.7 billion kilowatt hours covers 800000 households

With 42 wind turbine blades rotating in the wind, this far-reaching offshore wind farm has officially entered full speed operation. It is expected to contribute approximately 1.7 billion kilowatt hours of clean electricity annually, which is equivalent to meeting the annual electricity needs of about 800000 households. Compared with thermal power plants of the same scale, it can save 500000 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.35 million tons annually. This project injects strong green momentum into the optimization of energy structure and the achievement of dual carbon goals in Shandong Province and even North China. The transition from nearshore to deep offshore is an inevitable trend in the development of offshore wind power. The successful grid connection of this project proves that China has fully possessed the technical and engineering capabilities for large-scale development of deep-sea wind power, accumulating valuable experience and setting a new benchmark for the industry to move towards a broader deep-sea environment in the future.Editor/Gao Xue
