The sunshine and strong winds on the Mediterranean coast are about to be transformed into green blood that drives industry.
Under the spotlight of the 2026 Egypt Energy Exhibition, Green Hydrogen Development Holding Limited, a subsidiary of China United Energy Group, has officially formed an alliance with Abu Qir Fertilizer, Alexander Fertilizer, and Orascom Construction in Egypt. A memorandum of understanding aimed at reshaping the energy landscape of the Mediterranean has taken root under the joint witness of Egypt's Deputy Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Ihab Lagai, and Chairman of United Energy, Song Yu.

The ambition of the project lies in cold numbers: planning a 500 MW wind and solar power generation matrix, as well as a green hydrogen production capacity equivalent to 480 tons of green ammonia per day. This is not a city building from scratch, but a precise grafting - utilizing the existing ammonia infrastructure of Abu Qir and Alexander Fertilizer Company to seamlessly integrate green hydrogen into the existing pipeline network, directly forming a large-scale replacement for traditional natural gas. This "new energy+old infrastructure" model has made green hydrogen no longer a concept in the laboratory, but an immediately usable industrial blood.
Egypt's national will injected a stimulant into this project. Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi spoke on site: The government is preparing a package of investment incentives with an extremely ambitious goal - to increase Egypt's share of the global green hydrogen market to 8% and achieve the ultimate ambition of producing 10 million tons annually. For Egypt, which is currently in the throes of energy transition, this is not only a gold mine for exporting and earning foreign exchange, but also a life-saving straw to get rid of its dependence on fossil fuels.
When the sunshine of the desert and the wind of the Mediterranean are transformed into green molecules driving industry, Alexandria will no longer only export fertilizers, but also export future energy standards.Editor/Cheng Liting
