On April 10, 2026, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy of Myanmar and China North Petroleum&Chemical Corporation jointly held a contract signing ceremony for the Htaukshapin Kanni oil field crude oil production project in Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar. It is reported that Northern Petrochemical Co., Ltd. is a subsidiary of a higher-level company with the same name.

The Myanmar Ministry of Electricity and Energy has been inviting various enterprises to participate in the exploration, drilling, and production of onshore and offshore oil and gas through international bidding. At the signing ceremony, the federal minister stated that increasing crude oil production can effectively increase the supply of domestic petroleum products, benefiting the public directly. He also pointed out that Myanmar's oil fields have a development history of nearly a century, and the signed Htaukshapin Kanni oil field has been in operation for about 50 years, urgently requiring the use of modern technology to increase production. He mentioned that the project has high requirements for the company's technical equipment, human resources, investment strength, and industry experience. Based on these standards, Northern Petrochemical Co., Ltd. was ultimately selected to sign the relevant contract. Keywords: Myanmar, crude oil, oil fields

The federal minister also stated that in order to standardize operating procedures and protect the ecological environment, Myanmar has banned the use of manually excavated oil wells and allowed 36 local entrepreneur groups to operate standard oil wells. These standard oil wells are expected to be put into production soon, providing assistance for increasing crude oil production. At present, about 97% of Myanmar's fuel consumption relies on imports, and the people are facing many difficulties due to the global fuel crisis. To address these challenges, the Myanmar government is increasing its investment in oil and gas exploration and production. At the same time, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy is also fully promoting the domestic processing of domestically produced crude oil. In addition, there are plans to build new refineries and upgrade the Thapayakan refinery, which was built in 1982, to restore it to full load operation.Editor/Gong Ziwei
