Recently, a railway upgrade project from Azerbaijan quietly appeared on the bidding bulletin board of the Asian Development Bank's official website. The 192 kilometer long double track railway from Birajari to Yalama, although the tracks have been renovated, the electrification and signal system are still outdated configurations from decades ago. As the demand for freight transportation in the international north-south transport corridor continues to rise year by year, Azerbaijan has finally pressed the key to modernizing this throat railway.

ADB loan of 325 million US dollars
The Asian Development Bank has provided approximately 325 million US dollars in loan support for the project, with Azerbaijan Railway Company as the owner. The bidding adopts the ADB dual envelope procedure and is open to all eligible member country enterprises. The bidding deadline is set for May 29, 2026. The project covers the entire process of electrification, signal and communication system design, construction, and equipment installation, with an expected construction period of 42 months.

Fifteen stations will be fully renovated along the entire line
The track gauge of the Birajari Yarama railway is 1520 millimeters, with 15 stations along the line. The track infrastructure has recently been repaired, but the existing electrification and signal communication equipment are severely aging. This renovation will fully adopt a 25 kV AC electrification system and modern signal equipment that meets international standards, which is expected to significantly improve transportation safety and operational efficiency. The project is included in the modernization plan of the Baku Boyukkassk section, forming the overall puzzle of Azerbaijan's railway upgrade. Key nodes connecting the North South Corridor
This railway is an important component of the international north-south transportation corridor, connecting Russia and Iran, serving Azerbaijan's transit freight and domestic passenger and freight transportation. After the renovation is completed, Azerbaijan's hub position in the Eurasian cross-border logistics network will be further strengthened, and the railway freight channels in Central Asia and the Caucasus will also be smoother. For enterprises with the ability to integrate railway electrification and signal systems, this bidding document endorsed by the Asian Development Bank is the window period for entering the Caucasus railway market.Editor/Gao Xue
