On May 25, 2026, the Vitello 300 MW wind power project in Serbia officially began construction. The project is located in Panchevo city, about 40 kilometers away from the capital Belgrade, and will install 48 Chinese made wind turbines with a single capacity of 6.25 megawatts. This is currently the largest installed new energy project in Serbia and the largest wind power project under construction in the entire Eastern European region. The total investment is about 495 million euros, and the expected annual power generation is about 774 million kilowatt hours.

POWERCHINA Holdings invests 51%

The project is contracted and constructed by POWERCHINA Chengdu Institute and undertaken by Water and Electricity Fifth Bureau. POWERCHINA Overseas Investment Company holds a 51% stake and has secured the operating rights for the next 30 years. The project has signed a 15 year long-term power purchase agreement with Serbia's national power company and established a mechanism for stabilizing electricity price fluctuations: when the market electricity price is lower than the agreed price, the government will compensate for the price difference, and when it is higher than the agreed price, the excess returns will belong to the investors. Serbian President Vucic thanks Chinese companies for participating in local renewable energy project construction.

Customized supply of wind turbines by Dongfang Wind Power

Dongfang Wind Power signed a main engine supply contract in January 2026. To ensure that wind turbines comply with Serbian technical specifications, environmental standards, and adapt to local climate and grid conditions, the team has optimized and adjusted the unit design scheme based on the local standard system and special environmental conditions. The project plans to expand one 400 kV substation and construct approximately 7.5 kilometers of double circuit overhead transmission lines to connect to the existing power grid. From selling equipment to output system

This project is POWERCHINA's first new energy holding investment project in Serbia, led entirely by Chinese enterprises in terms of funding, design, equipment, construction, and operation for the next 30 years, marking the evolution of China's wind power going global from selling equipment to an output system. Serbia aims to increase the proportion of renewable energy in terminal electricity consumption to over 45% by 2030, and the country will add approximately 3.5 GW of wind and photovoltaic installed capacity. The Vitello project is the first core project under this national strategy.Editor/Gao Xue
