By 2025, Europe will add 36GWh of battery energy storage, breaking the milestone of 100GWh in cumulative operating capacity for the first time, with an annual growth rate of 48%. Utility projects accounted for more than half of the new installed capacity, Ukraine and Bulgaria were among the top five, and Türkiye became the most noticeable emerging force with more than 33GW of pre approved projects.

The growth curve of the European energy storage market is becoming increasingly steep. Over the past year, the 27 EU countries have contributed 27 GWh of new capacity, accounting for 75% of Europe's total annual capacity, with a cumulative operating capacity of nearly 80 GWh. Germany, the UK, and Italy continue to lead, but their combined share has decreased by nearly 20 percentage points. Ukraine and Bulgaria each added nearly 3GWh, entering the top five for the first time, sending a clear signal that the rise of small and medium-sized markets is accelerating, and a multipolar pattern of European battery deployment has been formed.

The era of large-scale storage has fully begun

Utility grade batteries have become the largest segmented market, occupying over 50% of the annual installed capacity as the absolute mainstay. Behind this shift in proportion is the structural transformation of the European electricity market: the penetration rate of renewable energy continues to rise, and the demand for long-term, high-capacity flexible regulation resources in the power grid is rapidly expanding. Independent energy storage power stations and wind solar distribution and storage projects are transitioning from demonstration to large-scale replication, and large-scale storage is evolving from an auxiliary role to an indispensable rigid configuration in the power system.

Pre approved pipeline exceeding 33GW

Türkiye's first inclusion in statistics in 2026 has aroused concern. The number of projects approved by the Energy Market Supervision Authority has reached 678, totaling 33.1 GW, exceeding the current total installed capacity of most European countries. As of the end of 2025, the operational capacity is 390MWh, and by February 2026, 300MWh of wind solar power distribution and storage will be connected to the grid.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Türkiye estimates that 2 to 3GW of battery energy storage will be put into operation from 2026. The benchmark forecast of the Energy Storage Industry Association is more specific: about 2.2 GWh of new operation will be put into operation in 2026, and the cumulative capacity will be about 8.7 GWh by 2030. A brand new regional energy storage hub is accelerating its formation at the Eurasian border.

Accumulated or reaching 580GWh by 2030

The annual installed capacity in Europe is expected to exceed 50 GWh in 2026 and approach 138 GWh in 2030, which is approximately four times the current level. At that time, the cumulative operating capacity will be about 580GWh, of which the 27 EU countries account for 470GWh, an increase of more than six times compared to the current level. This growth rate is expected to be driven by multiple factors, including the continuous decline in battery costs, the implementation of carbon border regulation mechanisms, and the improvement of capacity market mechanisms in various countries. The European energy storage industry is at a critical juncture of transitioning from policy driven to economic driven.Editor/Cheng Liting
