On the coastline of Maranh ã o state, strong sea winds drive white wind turbines to rotate rapidly, and continuous photovoltaic panels in the inland desert emit blue light under the noon sun - these inexhaustible new energy sources have long been forced to be abandoned due to the lack of external transmission channels. On June 24, 2026, local time in Brazil, with the full line construction permit obtained for the ± 800 kV high-voltage direct current transmission project of new energy in northeastern Brazil, an energy artery spanning four states is about to change everything. This project is independently invested, constructed, and operated by State Grid Brazil Holding Company. It is the third overseas landing of China's ultra-high voltage technology after the first and second phases of Meilishan ultra-high voltage. It won the bid in December 2023, signed a franchise agreement in April 2024, and officially entered the comprehensive construction stage in June 2026. It is planned to be fully operational by 2029, with a franchise period of 30 years.

Building a Thousand Mile Energy Corridor Across Four States

The project involves the construction of a new ± 800 kV high-voltage direct current transmission line with a total length of 1468 kilometers, supporting the construction of converter stations and ancillary facilities at both ends. The rated transmission capacity of the line is 5 million kilowatts, and it runs from north to south through the states of Maranh ã o, Tocantins, Goias, and Minas Gerais. The wind power, photovoltaic power, and hydropower accumulated in the northeast and north are bundled and directly transmitted to load centers in the central and eastern regions such as Brasilia, completely opening up long-distance high-capacity transmission channels, breaking the bottleneck of new energy consumption, improving the power supply guarantee of the capital city circle, and promoting the optimization of energy resource allocation and green low-carbon transformation in Brazil.

Annual carbon reduction of 6.84 million tons benefiting millions of households

After the project is put into operation, it can promote the consumption of clean energy by over 20 billion kilowatt hours per year, which is equivalent to reducing 6.84 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions and meeting the electricity needs of about 12 million local residents. It is expected that the construction will directly drive over 30000 local employment opportunities, promote industrial upgrading and regional balanced development along the route. It is worth mentioning that the Chinese team relied on environmental research, modeling, and scientific site selection to actively avoid Jalapaang State Park and the Central Plateau Environmental Protection Zone, as well as indigenous territories and natural caves. They optimized the design of tower foundations and construction access roads to reduce the clearance of 42.9 hectares of native vegetation, and implemented about 953 hectares of remote afforestation and ecological restoration along the line, striving to minimize the disturbance of the project to tropical rainforests and biodiversity.keywords:Foreign construction news network

The core converter transformer and other equipment of this project are developed by Chinese enterprises and have passed factory tests, fully exporting China's mature and advanced ultra-high voltage direct current technology standards and engineering management experience. Brazilian Vice President Alcmin praised it as an important milestone in the expansion and modernization of Brazil's power system, demonstrating the confidence of international investors in Brazil. The commencement of the whole line marks another major landmark achievement of China Brazil practical cooperation.
