Shenzhen Energy Expands to Ghana, Pioneering West African PV Overseas Development

Shenzhen Energy, which has been rooted in Ghana for nearly 20 years and has been deeply involved in the field of thermal power, has achieved a new breakthrough in its overseas business. The company officially announced the construction of a local 50 MW photovoltaic project, taking the first step in overseas photovoltaic layout with an investment of 34 million US dollars, injecting strong Chinese momentum into the upgrading of new energy in West Africa.

Project investment landing

The Tamali Photovoltaic Project in Ghana, which has landed this time, is located in Gongjia District, Savana Province, with a total investment of 34 million US dollars and a construction scale of 50 megawatts. The project will use 540 peak watt double-sided monocrystalline silicon modules and a 300 kW string inverter, with complete boosting and grid connected equipment, connected to the local 161 kV transmission system. In terms of funding, the project has its own funds of 12.5 million US dollars, and the remaining funds will be resolved through interest bearing loans. Shenneng Hong Kong and the Central African Development Fund have increased their capital by 60% and 40% respectively. The projects have been reviewed by the board of directors and require approval from the shareholders' meeting in the future.

Deeply cultivating the Ghanaian market

The main operator of this project, Shenzhen Energy Ansuo Power, has been deeply involved in the Ghanaian market for many years. Its gas turbine power plant has a total installed capacity of 560 megawatts and will be built and put into operation in two phases. Its power generation accounts for about 15% of Ghana's national total. In 2023, it achieved a profit of 110 million US dollars and has been awarded the Outstanding Energy Generation Enterprise of Ghana for five consecutive years. From long-term thermal power operation to a new photovoltaic layout, Shenzhen Energy has upgraded from single point operation to a comprehensive energy layout in Ghana, forming a dual wheel drive pattern of thermal power and photovoltaic.

Highlighting the value of going global

As a major economy in West Africa, Ghana's electricity demand continues to rise. The northern region has abundant sunshine resources and excellent conditions for photovoltaic development. The local government is also actively promoting energy structure transformation. The implementation of this project can fully leverage the advantages of China's entire photovoltaic industry chain and drive the export of domestic photovoltaic equipment and power supporting equipment. At the same time, relying on a mature local operation team, we will create an overseas model of first rooting thermal power and then expanding photovoltaics, providing mature references for domestic energy enterprises to explore the African market, and also helping West African countries improve their clean energy systems and fill the power supply gap.
